OBS branch with AMD VCE support.

Yup both there. x86 and x64 Strangely enough, the VCE option isn't greyed out and I can use it, but when I try to use Open CL for testing purposes, i get an error message saying it doesn't support AMD VCE whilst it works fine in W7
Oh, so that is something I haven't' checked yet

Why is AMD VCE support not available in main OBS branch?
Seems it is still not stable enough. There's random driver hangs/crashes. But I'll probably get this month (vacation) so far to get together a bit simpler AMF-only version for merging (if someone else doesn't want to step up ;) )

It seems to be pretty stable for me. I'm using it since I got a new graphics card (about 3 months ago) and it only hung once when trying to save an output file (I'm using OBS for local recordings). If I experience any crash, I'll provide logs to help you squash all the bugs :)

This is probably the right place to ask.. I'm planning on getting an r9 390 gpu soon.. In the article about supported hardware, latest supported are 290 and 290x.. Its probably from a while back.. so my question is: can i use the r9 390 for streaming and recording purposes with obs vce or the support for it still has to be added?

In short, yes. that will work similar to the GCN 1.1 level. b frames and up to 1080@60 with speed preset. 720@60/1080@30 should be capable with quality preset.

Wait, what kind of presets are we talking about? Is it just about configuring resolution and framerate in OBS settings, or is there something more about it?

You all say that 1080p60 with speed preset, nothing more, while I can do 1080p60 with balanced on my HD7850 :D
1080@60 speed is a very safe answer. sometimes more GPU reliant games cant do balanced from my experience.

EDIT: either way, if you are doing 1080@60, you are local recording in which the presets dont really make a difference because you can just give it more bitrate.

Just created this account to say that this is not working for me.

PC specs:
R7 260x
FX 6300
4GB RAM
W7 64bits latest updates

These are the settings:

Video driver:
Latest as of today (15.7)

As soon as I click start recording/start streaming one of the following will happen:
OBS will freeze (not responding) AND video driver will fail and recover (http://i.imgur.com/OgFXI4A.png)
OBS will just freeze (not responding)
I will get a blue screen of death and the computer will reboot (happened two times already)

There are no crashdumps since OBS freezes

version 15.7 not sure if this helps out the amf/obs but here it is
also might migrate to 10 very soon unless that will break obs

I've tried some of the win10 drivers before this, they seem to work better with new hardware (GCN 1.2) than the older ones, but I have had it say VCE is falling behind some randomish times, particularly on D3D9 game capture.

There should still be a log file, if you go to the help menu.

I just wanted to sign up real quick and chime in saying that it is most likely the 15.7 drivers breaking the VCE recording. Had a recent issue with Plays.TV and it was no longer able to record with the encoder program crashing. They released a fix rather quickly so it is most likely the code needs changing somewhere.

Also, while I'm here, I have used this branch of OBS quite a few times and love it.

Check custom then set the preset to speed. 1080@60 is the only preset that needs speed (sometimes balanced preset)

A R9-390 is basically a rebadged R9-290x with a couple added features.

Real question is what sort of encoding improvements are in Fury and how it compares to the 290/390 series.

its GCN 1.2 so it should be able to do 4k@30 h264 at least checkout encoding benches of the r9 285 and its probably a little better than that.
