Here's a demo video by SickMotionLoL on the issue. There are sections where the audio cuts out when he focuses OBS.

To be clear, nothing changed since yesterday, it just broke spontaneously in the last 24-28 hours.

I've been working with a streamer who says that the CPU usage for OBS Studio has dramatically dropped since yesterday. This issue only occurs when OBS is in the background though. A drop from 20-30% to under 10%. He also says that he doesn't think that Windows has updated in this time, but the issue occurred around half way into a stream.

With League of Legends open, the game will be running fine, but OBS will report a encoder overload (some times) and the stream + recording will drop frames or freeze completely.

This is also not an issue with available CPU as the total usage never goes above 50%. (strangely)

> Windows 7

There is something going on with how processes are assigned to the CPU (especially when using a dual monitor setup and switching the focus between different programs). If you open up your resource manager, you'll notice that not all of the cores are being used. CPU0 will be absolutely maxed out while the other cores are barely being used. I've tried setting the processor priority to high for obs but that doesn't seem to help.

The only way I've managed to temporarily fix the problem is alt+tab back and forth from the game until eventually the other CPU cores kick in and the CPU usage by obs goes back up to the normal 30%.

Someone else in this thread said that he fixed the problem by rolling back his NVIDIA drivers.

Can confirm that rolling back Nvidia drivers did nothing to fix the issue. Can also confirm that uninstalling the latest Windows update did not resolve the issue (which I didn't think it would since Win 10 does shit in the background when it updates that most people CAN'T undo unless there are Windows software savvy).

so i rolled back me GPU driver, removed the updates windows did in the past 48 hours, updated OBS to 18.0.2 and everything only got worse for me, i don't even get 30 fps in preview mode anymore. i'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with these specs: i7 3770, Nvidea Geforce GTX 970, 16GB ram. im trying to stream 720p30fps on 2500bitrate, i have 12000 up speed so the bitrate should not be a problem.

So glad there are so many that have the problem. Thought I never would get to stream again!

The issue occured sometime between Friday - Monday. I streamed on Thursday on top settings without a problem. When I tried on Monday I had issues.

I'm not entirely sure what has just happened or what I've changed (I'll be straight, nothing but it seems like something has changed) but the issue is suddenly GONE. In my previous post I stated that both OBS and Shadowplay were showing strange behavior. Now, out of no where, its gone. All I've been doing is stress testing my system and making sure that its not a hardware problem. I'm curious if Windows has pushed out some sort of hot fix over the past few minutes in the background because for a little while I did notice in the task manager that the system updater had suddenly kicked up in activity.

Edit:: Disregard. Problem remains.

Starting to really lean on the CPU task management theory. When unfocused on the game, and with OBS not running everything is fine. When OBS starts is when odd issues pop up not just for the game and OBS, but with a few of my kit as well. I have a few buttons on my keyboard and my mouse set to pulse light. I've noticed that when the OBS output framerate hitches, those lights suddenly glitch up as well.

Happy for you MrHatty :D
Hope it will do the same thing for everyone !

Can't wait to get home to test a stream ...

I'm with you brother. Still trying to hammer things out. Both Shadowplay and OBS have started showing the same behavior I've been talking about. I know its not hardware related. While under benchmarks and stress testing, everything reports back green.

That is UNTIL I got into the Firestrike benchmark and the physics test ran. Something is completely fucked in CPU task management right now.

TD:LR, Thanks Windows you fucks.

If you restart your PC, does the problem come back?

This latest restart, things seemed fine, then it started back up again.

Something is fucked with the CPU management indeed. It's like it can't handle the load between cores. When you've done the stress tests, it somehow is able to work it out. It's like a capacitor. If you get enough power through, you bypass some threshold.

Just me being theoretical with something I have no clue about... I am a dev, no damn technician ;P

Tried to disable Game Mode?

I'm not using the creators update, but I'll give you a complete run down on what I've done thus far to try and nail things down:

Switch encorders from x264 to NVECH
Disable all sources except for game capture.
Switched to display capture
Reduced bitrate
Reduce output resolution/fps
Reduce in-game graphic settings
Shutting down any other resource hungry programs
Disabled antivirus

All to no avail.

Windows 7 doesn't have game mode... Are there actually any Devs on these forums? There's like 20 threads about this same issue... And the mods sound like they're reading from a crappy call center script...

xD ImNatho !

But yep ... talking to a dev would be nice ! 5 thread about it and maybe a lot of more just reading our comments and with the same problems ...
The worst thing is we don't know where the issue come from ...

The issue popped up over the weekend, pretty much the same time Windows pushed an update. Its only circumstantial evidence to the cause, but from what I'm experiencing, probably the root of it all.

But the last time this system was updated was December, updates turned off, Windows 7... Unless windows pushes secret updates, how is the windows update the problem?

there's people having this problem that make a living out of streaming, i feel bad for these people not being able to do their job because of a fuckup somewhere
