yeah and one more.
Can I skip adding new VLC sources to my current OBS profile and just make a brand new one with VLC to test it there? Or do I gotta fully replace the old sources by deleting em and adding VLC instead?
So, do I gotta stick with VLC sources long-term? Or can I switch back to default ones later on? Cuz I'm planning to reinstall Windows soon anyway.

heh I keep mentioning this but you are skipping ahead. I know you are just asking questions but you are getting ahead of yourself. Right now you just need to test with media sources out of the equation, doing this in your current solution would be the smarter way to go about this are at least duplicating the collection and doing it there. When you are trying to find the source of an issue, making a bunch of huge changes (creating an entirely new collection to test in) doesn't really give you the info you want.

good time to you.
so yesterday i swapped all the sources to vlc ones, and during a 9-hour stream obs didn’t crash once. guess it finally worked, thanks.
but man, these vlc sources are way more annoying than the default obs ones. i can’t change the playback speed of my .mp4 videos, and vlc doesn’t handle .gif files at all, had to make a bunch of new ones. not happy with how it works, but looks like there’s no other option.

and yeah, my question still stands – why did this even start happening outta nowhere? like, i didn’t change a thing in obs or windows, and suddenly obs just starts closing itself without warning, and windows logs show an avcodec error?

For your .gif files you can try using image sources instead of media sources. I don't have an answer on what specifically has changed, others have reported similar issues but I have been unable to replicate them using the same files that are causing them to crash so I would assume it is something specific to your system.

you can try using image sources
yeah, same here that's exactly what i been doin. but now i got extra sources i didn't even want, just cuz of that (:

i feel the same tho, once i reinstall everything, ima switch all my sources back to the default ones and test it out. not gonna happen anytime soon, but hopefully i remember to come back and drop an update here.

as of now, i’d say this can be considered as SOLVED — unless some new mess shows up later.
