Bug Report OBS can't stream from my Hauppage PVR HD gaming edition!

Hi Jim

Thank you for posting your updates in here. I'm not going to moan or complain as I appreciate the work you do. I work for a pretty big software company handling all the testing of our products and resolving issues for our customers. So on a smaller level, I know how much hard work goes into making a great piece of software.

I was hoping you could give some advice though.

I was unfortunate enough to purchase hauppauge hd pvr 2 gaming edition plus. I probably should have done my research first, I just saw that the guy was selling it for £65 instead of £150.

Anyway, let me explain my set up and the problem.

I am streaming from PS4 using HDMI. USB cable going into my Macbook air. It is a top end Macbook air, i7 processor and 8GB of ram with 320gb SSD hard drive. So quite a powerful machine.

So the hauppauge hd pvr 2 gaming edition plus signal is being sent to my Mac but I am having to run the HDPVR capture software that hauppauge provide, select it to send the signal to VLC. It is only if I do that, OSB will be able to pick up the signal from VLC. Because I have to effectively have the stream open twice (once in VLC and again in OSB), I am getting a pretty laggy steam to Twitch.

I know you said earlier in the post, you are not really a Mac guy, which is fair enough. I would go and use my Windows laptop, but it is pretty poor in specs. My windows machine is only AMD dual core processor and 3gb of DDR 2 ram I think.

I have read through some of your threads and cannot find anything about another Mac build that fully supports hauppauge hd pvr 2. Just wondering if you coudl give some advise for it or if you know of a way I could remove the need to use the other capture software and VLC. This would save some CPU power and produce a smoother stream.

Or if anybody else could chip in with some advice?.

Saying that, I am now considering selling my hauppauge hd pvr 2 gaming edition plus and getting the elegato.

Thanks again Jim

As far as I know, Hauppauge does not provide drivers for the HD PVR 2 on Mac that let OBS add it directly, so the best workaround would be to use display capture on the Hauppauge software.

Yeh, thank Hauppauge for that. I would love to use their software if it was any good. However, if I want my stream to look professional with overlays etc, then I am screwed. Anybody want to buy a Hauppauge from me :) I have listed it on Amazon already. Will buy a better capture card.

Not yet.. I have to buy one. Wish I could get everything working perfectly for everyone but life is sadly never that simple.

Just curious, man, did you ever get the HD PVR to work well? I recently received one from a friend, and when I tried streaming, it was incredibly slow.

Hello you all.
I'm sorry to ask you this after such a long time, but I decided that was better option than just create a new thread, so here's my question. I've been reading a lot about it, here on foruns and on other websites and communities, and I can't get this sorted (at least, get a answer about it).
I have a Youtube channel and I would like to do some livestreams from my PS3. So, I've been testing the OBS and since I'm a rookie yet, I don't know if it's possible to do this. I have my PS3 connected to an HDPVR (the first version, 1212 model) and when I add a "Media Capture Device" source on OBS, it's seems I can't get any video or audio from it, getting only a black screen. Is there are any solution for this? Is this some error from my own? Or the hardware/software aren't just compatible in order to livestreaming?
Thanks in advance for your time and patience!

Kind regards,
João

Make sure you're using OBS Studio and not OBS Classic.

I am. I also read about it, because I realized that OBS Studio is actually the "older" OBS Multiplatform, which has the video capture device option (am I right?). I can get you some details on what kind of settings I'm using right now, if it's easier.

EDIT: Ok, I'll show you the hardware I'm using and what kind of configs I do have right now.

- Playstation 3 Slim
- Hauppauge HDPVR (model 1212, year 2009)
- Windows 10 Pro OS on a i5 4690K, ASRock Z97 Extreme4 motherboard with 4x 4GB Patriot Viper 3 DDR3 and a tired, small but yet functional Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 1GB DDR5
- OBS Studio 64 bits (0.16.5 version)
- At scenes, I have included a "Video Capture Device" source (it's the "HDPVR" on the images), which actually gets the device itself but on which I have this settings - image below.

I have my PS3 connected via Component to my Hauppauge device, which is connected to my tv via Component too. I'm using all the rear inputs and outputs (which I've configured at "Config. Crossbar"). I have signal on my TV, and also on my Hauppauge software.

If I can get this right, I want to also make a video tutorial about it, because I feel I can't find it anywhere. Yet, I'm feeling that what I want to do it's not possible for some reason (maybe the aged hardware I'm using is the problem... I don't trully know).

EDIT 2: Ok, so I've been searching a little more, and I found a work around that it's enough for me, at least. Since I want to stream no better than 720p, this method works perfectly to me I guess. I decided to include the links here just because they might be useful for other users. So, the method itself it's quite easy, and I don't even know why I haven't thoght about it, but it is.

This first video is the method we should use, I guess:

This second video is the workaround process I've told you about:

(Props for the Hauppauge! guys.)

I'll be quite interested in an answer from you, and I'll do what I can to help if you need it. I'm not programming myself anymore, but I was so I can try to help you guys in someway if I can.
Kind regards!
