First off, I would like to say that you have done a great job with this implementation, Jackun. However, I m in a bit of a pickle. I just re-installed windows to my pc and now when I try and use OBS, it crashes and gives me this crashlog:

OBS has encountered an unhandled exception and has terminated. If you are able to
reproduce this crash, please submit this crash report on the forums at

a description of what you were doing at the time of the crash.

This crash appears to have occured in the 'c:\windows\system32\kernelbase.dll' module.

Use DDU to wipe the drivers windows provides then reinstall drivers for the newest AMD drivers

i have question what is best for to use

I have i5 - 2130 Cpu sandy bridge support intel quick sync
amd Hd 7730 GPU - support Amd Vce
10 gb of ram

should i use quick sync or x264 or Amd Vce
Either will work about the same but with VCE, you should be able to use game capture or window capture without compatibility mode. select AMD card in the video tab of OBS.

With quicksync, you will have to either select your intel card in the video tab of OBS or use compatibility mode with window capture. game capture wont be available to you then.

I have a problem, it has something to do with IDR Period. It's seems that VCE is refreshing every x frames and it causes a pixelated blur on a video :/ when I set IDR to 0, 60 or higher refresh is about one time per second. When it's set to 30 it's about two times per second. Any ideas how to get rid of that? :(

It's really annoying cause it happens in static scenes :/

Hello,

I'm trying to use this with my Sapphire 7970 HD. At first OBS would freeze when I tried to preview, then I found someone else with a 7970 that posted a screenshot of their settings, albeit from a much earlier version of the branch. After changing to those, I was able to record a local file to test. OBS showed it was recording properly around 2500 bitrate and the video was fine.

However, when I attempt to actually stream, it immediately freezes again.

Here are some logs. Am I misreading them, or does it say it's trying to stream at 250000 bitrate?

First, use AMF in the encoding tab, int he AMD VCE encoder tab, use custom parameters.

for 720@30. CBR, GOP 60 IDR 60 preset quality, I use host but you can try dx11 (this is just how VCE is used and has nothing to do with what game you use. I check Disabvle D3D/OpenCL interop, but again try with and without.

set bitrate and buffer to 3000

If, for some reason you get in-game lag, default back to host and disable D3D interop.

Okay, I found these settings and gave it a shot since I'm aiming for 720@30 as well. It streams now. I'm using 2500 bitrate though. D3D/OpenCL interop is disabled. DX11, not Host.

On first impressions the in game text in the broadcast isn't as sharp as I'd like. Not sure if I need a higher bitrate to make it sharper, or if there's other things I can do.

Edit: For some reason, if I change it to 3000 bitrate and buffer, it crashes when I try to stream. Not changing anything else, just those...at 2500, it works.

Edited edit: Streamed Elite: Dangerous for about an hour. Only noticed a couple hiccups. Game hung for a second as if the CPU were overworked, looked over and OBS said Warning: High Encoding. Second time game hung the same way, but when I looked over it said VCE too slow, or VCE can't keep up, something along those lines. Log attached.

Encoding video with res. bigger then 1920x1080 (Ex. 4K) isn't supported by hardware or...?

1080@60 is about the max limit with the speed preset. this is true for VCE 1.0 and 2.0 hardware. The R9 285 (VCE 3.0?) will record at much higher since its a 4k encoder from my understanding. At the same time, it will be restricted by h264 until h265 is a more common place.

All that being said, you should be able to stream/record 1080@60 with quality preset with that r9 285 (and future r9 300 series) or maybe even a bit higher no issues.

IDR should be set to 2x whatever fps you have. GOP should be half, equal, or double the fps.

Here are some logs. Am I misreading them, or does it say it's trying to stream at 250000 bitrate?

AMF It will stream/record at the bitrate set. OVE or OpenCL has been known in the past to reset the vbv to much higher so it only really recommended for local recording at higher bitrate. I honestly haven't tried it recently.

See above and yes, hardware encoding you pretty much have to add 300-500kbps more to look about the same as x264

@Fenric

Code:
18:26:20: Failed to submit input buffer multiple times already.
VCE is probably too slow for current settings.
18:31:25: RTMPPublisher::SocketLoop: Stalled for 1687 ms to
write 11334 bytes (buffer: 0 / 335872), unstable connection?

so its either connection it stalling or something. the log says you used 10mbps bitrate with 1mbps buffer. I dont even see 3000 in that log. I would set bitrate/buffer to the same no matter what the setting.

Also, dont use 0 buffer since I dont think VCE understands that yet (I've seen crashes in the past from that.

Here's a minute clip: http://www.twitch.tv/fenric/c/6533151

Settings are in the highlight description, but: 3k bitrate, AMF, CBR, 60 GOP size / IDR Period, 30 I Pic Period, 36 MV Search Range X/Y, AMF Quality / Host, Disabled D3D/Open CL Interop.

When I tried 3k bitrate before and it crashed right away, I had OVE as well as AMF enabled under Encoding. Oops?

I'm happy with how my CPU usage is using this, but it's blocky. Inside the cockpit it's really blocky as the lighting changes.

i pic to 0 but that is the only obvious issue from what I see.

Changed that, thanks.

So I have to ask, is anyone streaming high motion games with VCE and not getting blocky areas? Or are the ones using it just using it for local recording for like YouTube videos?

I used it for streaming L4D2 for a while, but eventually just got a better CPU. I still play with VCE from time to time

Hmm, but how did it look? If you checked that highlight I made, you can see how blocky it is.

I tested a bit with x264 fast preset at 2200 bitrate to compare and the blockyness was much better, but my CPU would sit in the low 90s for usage when lots of objects were on screen like in an asteroid field. I still wasn't totally satisfied with the quality either.

I should finally get around to overclocking my i5 3570k I suppose. That's why I got it in the first place. I wonder if I will be able to push it to medium, or just stay at fast preset without creeping over 90% usage.

Current "quality" preset of VCE still sits somewhere between superfast and veryfast, but that is basically all hardware-based encoders. they will get better over time though
currently, VCE has 3 presets, quality, balanced and speed. the only time to use speed or balanced is with 1080@60 and higher. the rest of the time, check, "quality" preset to get the best.

EDIT: I will have to wait to get home to check out the highlight.

The MP4s that output when recorded from AMD VCE mode are unreadable from Sony Vegas, but the same build using x264 works kinda; it has its own set of issues such as no video or audio, but it at least allows an import.

Does anyone know what the issue might be?

Intel QuickSync has some major quality issues in my uses of it so far. I'd recommend AMD VCE, but it really all depends on the games you play, performance you wanna play at, and the quality you want of your stream. Do some FPS and system utilization checks when recording to really see which is better for your system.
