Question / Help Elgato HD60 audio and video skipping

I hope to keep this thread going. I to am suffering from the same problem.

To summarize, the problem is a split second hang of both the video and the audio during a screen transition/loading screen of a game. It could be a more simple transition, such as navigating a fullscreen menu, or a more drastic transition such as a death.

The most obvious culprit for me are classic games, such as ones made by rare. Banjo kazooie and Donkey Kong being a great example. When you enter a room, the screen transitions with a mostly black swipe of a zoom of the Game's logo. And without fail, When the HD60 is working over OBS, it will hang during these transitions. (Note, like previous posts, when working in any other software there is no hang during these transitions.)

(Edit: And i have also tested this across 3 computers. Each one with fresh installs, 2 with full uninstalls and reinstalls of the drivers.)

At no other part during the stream or recording does it hang. It only does this during the screen transitions.

I have further tested this with the WiiU, as that has native HDMI and i dont have to use an adapter. I then tested it with the game Klonoa, for the wii, and just as before the game will hang during transitions. (The most notable being when you die.)

Below are some links to my log files. One is of me just running around, performing tasks, and just letting the game run like normal without doing any screen transitions. The other, is me repeatedly falling to my death in order to force the transition screen. I can see little difference between them, but yall might have more luck.

Repeatedly Transitioning -- https://gist.github.com/anonymous/0d3ad59d27b33a38719e

Please note, that much like the previous participants of this thread, i have tried a mass of different settings to try and improve performance. I have tried adjusting the resolution, fps, and the buffers of both the encoding and the capture source. (Also, it will hang no matter the resolution and fps i set to for the capture source.)

When i made the logs, i tried setting things to optimal settings for best results. But, if anyone out there has any tips id very much appreciate it.

Otherwise, i would like to help keep this thread going for a possible future resolution.

Same issue here with the Elgato Game Capture HD, not HD60. I tried absolutely everything mentioned in this thread with no luck. I even changed my USB and HDMI cables.

The stutter does not occur when using the Elgato software or any broadcasting software other than OBS.

Very annoying especially when playing RPGs and a battle starts :(

I hope it will be resolved soon.

I too have this problem. Playing old RPG's like Final Fantasy, it kind of sucks. It's nothing extremely game-breaking or video-recording breaking in those games, but there's a LOT of stutters because of Random Encounters, Menuing, and just lots of transition screens. :/

Just as a heads up, one not so elegant solution, is the same thats used for other catpure devices that dont work natively with obs. While not the best, you can always run the elgato game capture software and just capture the frame inside the window or the entire monitor if you fullscreen it. It does require a dual monitor setup, and is very taxing on the processor due to encoding, You also have to fiddle around with mic syncing. But... itll do the job untill a more elegant fix is found.

Also, im still waiting to hear back from Elgato support. Im gonna try and use the warranty to swap it out to see if maybe we are just the unlucky few who have defective units.

Guys, I found the solution... and it was stupid simple... I thought it was a Windows 10 thing since I upgraded to Windows 10 and then this transition stuttering started happening. It is actually the Elgato Driver that you're using, btw I'm using the old Elgato HD. I ended up downloaded the latest version 2.11.42 and ran into the topical problem. I've since uninstalled it and went for the oldest version I could find 1.42.24 and it works perfectly.

Here's the link to all the old drivers, try find the latest one that doesn't have the issue:

Worked for me :) Thank you very much!
Tested them all, only 1.42.24 solved the problem.

Never wouldve thought this was a driver issue. I will keep my Elgato then.

I've had the stuttering issue as well, but I didn't really notice how bad it could be until a few days ago. Just as everyone has said already, whenever the game goes through any sort of loading sequence, the audio and video hang for a second or two before returning to normal. In something like Resident Evil 4, the stuttering even occurs when you bring up your inventory to switch weapons, heal, or check your map...

The posts above me say that the older driver fixes the issue, and I'd love to try it myself. However, can anyone confirm that rolling back the Elgato drivers revives the gradual desync issue? I don't want to trade stuttering for the constant mic-sync monitoring I used to do when I first started streaming.

Well, I answered my own question, hahaha. I streamed Resident Evil 4 for about three-and-a-half hours earlier today using the old Elgato drivers. No stuttering between load screens, transitions, or inventory management, and the audio stayed in sync! Using the older drivers seems to be the way to go.

I'm having the exact same issue. It basically makes games with lots of little loadings (i.e. Super Mario Maker's doors) impossible to deal with.

ElGato's Game Capture HD program records them locally without issue. OBS x86 gets crushed whenever mario enters a door (triggers loading of a new zone). I never noticed it much when playing Splatoon because you have 3 or 5 minute rounds with no loading much. But in Mario Maker it's impossible to stream with the current setup.

As for the recommendations of getting an older version. Version 1.42.24 doesn't support the HD60, so that advice doesn't apply at all. The lowest you can go and still get your HD60 to work is 2.01.x but that version does NOT fix the problem.

Really sucks- hoping we can get some light shined on this.

Edit: All of my tests were done with local recordings. I gave up on streaming with this setup long ago...

Same exact problem I have as well with my HD60. I've true tried basically every combination possible. Game capture hd records and streams with no problems but obs stutters and lags no matter what. I'll try the downgrade drivers solution tomorrow but it shouldn't be necessary to fix a problem like this.

Hi Guys,

We recently released Game Capture software beta update 3.0, which now includes new drivers and 64bit.

Please download either the 32bit or 64bit version of the software from elgato.com/gaming/download and let me know if that helps with the issues you guys are encountering.

Problem still occurs with these new drivers but at least I can use the 64 bit version of OBS now so I guess that's something.

I have the exact same problem, and it still occurs with these new drivers.

It's also impossible for me to downgrade to 1.42.24, because apparently I have newer Elgato hardware that isn't compatible with those drivers. So it seems like I'm just stuck.

Same issue I am having as well I use the Elgato hd60 been using it for almost a year now with OBS just fine tonight I started getting the lag issue mostly between bring up and closing the item menu in Resident Evil 4 ps3 version. Played the game on my stream last night just fine with no issue and tonight it started. I loaded it into game capture hd and it runs perfect no issues. I have tried everything listed here, tested all usb ports, changed out hdmi wires. I uninstalled and went back to older versions of obs and still getting the issue I have no idea what changed from yesterday to today to cause this issue.

I just got the Elgato HD60 today to replace my Avermedia LGP because you guys show better customer care. That said,I do currently have a stutter issue with my stream. I don't know if it's the same one as this thread but basically every like 3 seconds of playing my game, there is a half second stutter. Is this basically what is being addressed here?

Please dont necro old threads. I would just post a new thread with your OBS logfile and explain out the issue as this might or might not be the same issue.
