Hey everyone, I need some help figuring out if what I’m seeing is normal or if I messed something up in my setup.
My setup (Dual PC):
Gaming PC → HDMI → Elgato 4K X (IN)
Elgato 4K X (OUT) → HDMI → Gaming Monitor
Elgato 4K X → USB-C → Streaming PC
I set the capture card’s passthrough to 120 Hz, so now my gaming monitor is also running at 120 Hz.
The problem: tearing everywhere – even in the capture card preview.
I’m testing this in Minecraft.
I’m getting tearing on my gaming monitor (expected, because I’m using uncapped FPS + no VSync), but also in the capture card preview and in OBS recordings on the streaming PC.
This really confused me because I always thought tearing only happens on the monitor and shouldn’t be recorded, since the HDMI signal should be “clean”. But in my case, the tearing is passed directly into the capture card and shows up in the recordings exactly the same way.
Only fix so far: enabling VSync on the gaming PC.
Turning on VSync in the game completely removes the tearing on the monitor, in the passthrough, and in the recording.
My question:
Is it normal for uncapped-FPS tearing to be transmitted through the passthrough and show up in the capture signal?
Or is something wrong with my configuration?
I always thought capture cards capture the GPU output before the monitor introduces tearing, but it looks like in my case the tearing is actually happening inside the HDMI output itself.
Has anyone experienced this or knows if this behavior is normal for the 4K X?
Thanks in advance!
