Hello OBS Team and Community,
I would like to propose a small but impactful quality-of-life improvement for future releases of OBS Studio: updating the default Canvas and Output (Scaled) resolution from 720p to 1080p upon a fresh installation.
While 720p was a sensible and safe default for many years, the baseline for video production and streaming has significantly evolved. Here is why I believe 1080p should be the new out-of-the-box standard:
Thank you for your incredible work on OBS Studio! I’d love to hear the community’s and developers' thoughts on this.
- Modern Hardware Capabilities: Today's entry-level GPUs and CPUs, equipped with efficient hardware encoders (NVENC, AMF, QuickSync), can handle 1080p encoding effortlessly without causing system bottlenecks.
- Platform Standards: Platforms like YouTube and Twitch treat 1080p as the standard viewing experience. Delivering a 720p stream or recording often feels outdated to modern audiences.
- Better First Impressions for Beginners: New users installing OBS for the first time might not immediately realize they need to adjust the output settings in the menus. A 1080p default ensures their first streams or local recordings look sharp right away, preventing frustration.
- Native Monitor Resolutions: 1080p has been the minimum standard for desktop monitors for over a decade. Currently, many users capture a 1080p (or higher) screen, which OBS then downscales to 720p by default, causing an unnecessary loss of visual fidelity.
Thank you for your incredible work on OBS Studio! I’d love to hear the community’s and developers' thoughts on this.
