OBS is badly broken on Mac

I wish I hadn't upgraded to OBS 30.1.2. It has so many more bugs now, the stuttering video is the least of the problems. I'm constantly getting the "OBS Quit Unexpectedly" window every single time I shut the app down, even if I start it in Safe Mode. When the app is open, none of the buttons work. I click on Properties or Filters, nothing happens, the window won't appear that lets me change those properties. Sometimes I find the properties window behind the main OBS window, but, most of the time it just doesn't appear at all.

I've attached the crash report in case anyone actually looks at the posts here.

We have very different experiences.

I’ve found the latest OBS to be very solid on the Mac. That may suggest the problem lies with another part of your system.

The previous version wasn't like this at all, so that suggests to me that something in the new version is making the system unstable. Nothing changed about my setup or system other than upgrading to the latest version of OBS. The problems still exist even if I start OBS in Safe Mode.

Unfortunately it seems no one can provide an answer for you. If it was a common problem it would have been screamed across the forums before now.

I'm so happy for you that you're not having any problems at all with OBS on your Mac and that it works flawlessly for you. However, I am not the only person experiencing these issues and there are threads like this of others having the same kinds of problems.

I was previously using BlackHole to do screen recordings and it was so terribly complicated to get set up properly for it to work, I searched for an alternative and found OBS. I download OBS 30.1.2, selected Screen record for the Scene and macOS Screen Capture for the Source. I only do screen recording for webinars and podcasts that I want to save and watch later, so in the macOS Screen Capture settings, I chose Application Capture for the Method and Safari for the Application. The only other thing I changed was to mute the built-in mic under Audio Mixer, because I was getting echoing from the computer audio and the recorded audio from the mic. I also learned I had to resize the screen recording window to fit the visual preview of the computer window. Otherwise, by default, the red outline of the recording window was way bigger than the computer window.

With this set-up, I have done many recordings with absolutely no problems.

Hi, thanks for your reply, although I'm not sure how it relates to my original post. I'm using OBS for livestreaming, whereas you're using it to make screen recordings. And the issues I'm having are that the video stutters badly in OBS while it doesn't stutter at all in other applications that use the same video source. Every time I close the app it crashes.

Have some similar issues with OBS. If i Connect my Osmo Pocket 3 and select 4k Resolution (DJi says it's possible now) the picture freezes. i use a usb-c cable for 4k but it´s not working.

So for all those who have problems with the Osmo Pocket 3 and OBS Studio in 4K resolution I have a solution ready. Unfortunately the DJi support was not very helpful. But I found a solution myself.
First I reset the device to the factory settings. Then I went into OBS Studio and added a capture card (important!) and not video device! Then I selected Osmo Pocket, the resolution should be 3840x2160, then the frame rate to Simple FPS 30 and then at the bottom to Input Format: NV12-420Y.... And it works!
Hope this helps you.

I have had the same problem with the person who started this thread except my screen has not been stuttering. Otherwise, symptoms have been similar. OBS crashes and buttons are not available. This has been very annoying for a long time. In the end, I solved the problem by re-installing OBS which caused all my custom browser docks and other custom docks to disappear. I believe one of those were causing issues with new OBS version because otherwise I cannot figure out what has causing issues. This is very bad fault which new OBS version has and the developers should seriously look into this. However, for me issue doesn't exist anymore but I had to sacrifice my custom docks for that. At least I don't want to try and put them back in case problem comes back.

I have the "Quit unexpectedly" issue too no matter how I close the app. I'm also getting more freezing when recording with this version.

Hi, thanks for responding, because some people think I'm the only one having this issue.

I'm curious, what camera do you have connected to your computer, and what kind of Mac are you using? I have an M3 iMac and I'm using a Canon R6 Mark II camera, and the video images stutters quite a bit sometimes even with a direct USB C connection from the camera to the computer without any capture card between them (this camera supports UVC connections so a capture card isn't needed). But I had the same problem with my R6 Mark I using an CamLink 4K dongle via HDMI, so, it's either OBS doesn't work well with Canon cameras, or it has something to do with OBS and iMacs or something else.

The crashing upon closing the app happens nearly every time. The few times it hasn't happened, I have no idea why. But even if I start the app in Safe Mode, I have the same issues, so, I don't think it's a plug-in, I think there's a problem with Macs and OBS.

I'm also having issues with OBS 30 & my Mac. I had to replace my hard drive cause the last one crashed and I've had nothing but trouble since. Here is what my latest is. Before it showed it recorded for the full 90minute service but only had 3 minutes on the recording.

I am using a simple USB webcam and a GoPro with ATEM mini pro. My laptop is a MacBook Pro 2019.

Unfortunately, my problem reappeared. I connected my YouTube account to OBS in able to start my livestream. Immediately this problem appeared again and it is making my streaming extremely difficult. One of my cameras was not connected properly, but now I cannot open camera properties to choose the right camera. The button just doesn't work neither does the right-click dropdown menu. I cannot try to reinstall OBS in the middle of my live stream so now I have to work only with one camera. The dropdown menu on the upper bar is also misbehaving. When I click any text up there nothing happens, then I click the same text a second time and the dropdown menu quickly appears and disappears again. However, for some strange reason Settings button seems to be working. So there are some buttons which are working but most of them are not working.
This is a very strange and annoying issue which makes it very difficult to work with OBS. I am seriously considering to use some another livestreaming software even if I have to pay for it instead of using OBS because of this problem.

I am having the exact same issues -- that's why I came here looking for solutions. Each time I quit OBS I get a crash report -- buttons not working, etc.

I am on the latest version and I am facing this issue as well. It also impacts my stream, I am unable to stream. The audio streams fine but the degradation of the video stream is drastic I have like 70-90% frame drop. When I speed test with OBS open it's killing it. Then when I close out I am getting the "quit unexpectedly" error. Not sure if I can roll back to a previous version that would be ideal I would think?

Hello guys there,

This is really problematic. OBS was working fine before, but now with the latest version (31.0.1) on macOS, I’m experiencing frame freezing after just a few minutes of recording. My setup: MacBook Pro M1 Max, 1TB SSD, 64GB RAM, latest macOS version. It’s frustrating because OBS is a key tool for my work, and this issue makes it nearly unusable.

Hey brother, I've had the exact same issues for a few months now and believe I've finally found a solution for my own OBS! I currently do gaming streams with a face cam, elgato screen capture (for ps5), and an audio interface for my shure mic, etc. and I EXCLUSIVELY STREAM TO YOUTUBE. I noticed that someone else in this thread said they had to delete some of their custom docks/ui in OBS to get rid of this problem, so I tried that myself. It seems that the problem for my OBS was the "Youtube Live Control Panel" dock. As soon as I deleted this from my UI my OBS was running fine again. This was for versions 31.0.0rc1 and 31.0.0(I didn't try other versions since I was scared it would stop working again). Hopefully you also use youtube and this is your problem, but if not I'd try troubleshooting with your custom docks and see if you find a solution! (You can also find past versions of OBS to download here that can maybe solve your other problems https://github.com/obsproject/obs-studio/releases)

jothamcity, That fixed the problem. I've been trying several different things and after seeing your post, I just unselected "Youtube Live Control Panel" and problem solved. Thanks for the tip. I'm running OBS 31.0.2 on a Macbook Pro (intel I9) and Sequoia.
