Question / Help OBS Crashing

Do away with the Windows Anniversary Update!

I had the same issue with OBS starting to randomly crash all of a sudden. It would just lock up the stream and the stream preview, would not react to "Stop Stream" button anymore and needed to be killed off through the taskmanager. The only thing I had changed before was the Windows Anniversary Update. I went back to a previous build and now everything is running just fine again.

If you don't know how to: Go to Settings -> Recovery -> Go back to an earlier build
If it asks you if you want to install updates just say "No"

EDIT: Winver now reports "Version 1511 (Build 10586.589)". Hope this helps.

This is, of course, an option. Usual disclaimers apply: uninstalling/reverting updates may affect other software and the security of your system, and Microsoft may eventually force push the update to Windows 10 machines anyway, etc., etc.

The only issue with that is that I wont know if I actually crash while live streaming. Usually ill see the preview freeze and then I know right away that its down. I can watch a preview on a web browser but the downside is it uses a lot of CPU usage.

But I guess I can give it a try.

This is exactly what's been happening to me. I use a second computer with another monitor and Synergy to keep an eye on my stream live on Twitch. http://symless.com/synergy/

F it this sounds like the best idea I've heard so far. Lets give it a go.
 
Well so far everything is running as normal. Looks like it was the Windows Update that fucked everything up. Just hope you guys have a fix for it before they force the update out like ya said.

Anyways I will keep testing for a few more days and let you know if any hiccups occur.
 
Yeah it took me a while to figure out that I had use display capture. I got it to display correctly but OBS kept crashing anyway.

If possible, could you explain exactly which Windows Updates you reverted, and what version of Windows 10 you're on right now? To check your current Windows 10 version, you can run "winver" from the Start Menu.
 
Out of curiosity, did you recently update your video card drivers? I reverted to the previous Nvidia drivers and have had success so far.

I should have mentioned that in my previous post too. Winver reports Version 1511 (Build 10586.589) after I rolled it back.

After going on there site I believe the updates I got was

Updates for Windows 10 Version 1607

September 20, 2016 — KB3193494 (OS Builds 14393.187 and 14393.189)
September 13, 2016 — KB3189866 (OS Builds 14393.187 and 14393.189)

I am on Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.589)
 
Turns out I'm stilling getting freezes/crashes even after rolling back my drivers. I'm noticing this happen when my CPU usage hits 100%. I'm playing Forza while recording and it seems like OBS is fine up until my CPU starts getting maxed out. I can record for long periods of time, but it usually freezes when my CPU is getting hit hard.
 
I hope you guys are able to get a fix soon. Cause from the look of it you need Windows Anniversary Update to play
Forza Horizon 3 on PC...

Yes I do. 970 GTX with latest drivers, updated them a day or so ago.

Edit: To be more precise: I rolled back to pre-AU and OBS worked again. I then updated my drivers and still no issues. Hope this helps.

It's being looked into, but I'm not sure this is something OBS Studio can fix. This may be an issue between Microsoft and Nvidia. An Nvidia employee stated that Microsoft broke some stuff with Win10AU which is causing issues for Nvidia products. That employee also suggested that some older drivers may not exhibit the issue.
