Question / Help Not sure on a CPU

Thanks for the responses. Jolly, it's statements such as these that just frustrate me to no end:

anyone that would advise you to go with an i5 clearly isn't interested in quality video.

Especially because I'm running on an old CPU and I'm very concerned with video quality. But instead of opting for the highest options that I can go for, I find a lot more satisfaction in finding what's good "enough". Of course that's different for everybody, and that's why I wanted to find out what kind of streamer Kruzus is.

the i5 vs i7 on newegg is only a $90 difference

It seems we're also dealing with a difference in frame of reference. For a difference of $90 I would probably go for the i7. Also, you mentioned a price of $250 for the 4770K before. Over here I pay the equivalent of about $390 for that processor (and coupled with a decent motherboard about $600 in total), so that might also drive my decision to not get that processor and to opt for a "bang for the buck" purchase instead. I personally like those purchases a lot better myself as well, but that's just me.

Of course, if you're doing other stuff that requires the processing power (such as 3D modelling, intensive multimedia work, or CAD) you're going to want to get a faster CPU. I do some music production on the side, but so far I've encountered no reasons to upgrade yet.

Jack0r, interesting that you couldn't pull that off with your old processor, since the 2320 outperforms the 750! It's probably a difference in games that we play, but this makes me wonder how my computer would perform when streaming those kinds of games. I have BF3, so I should probably try it some time.

I don't question the performance of the i7. I'll gladly believe that that thing performs like a beast. I just like looking for other, more affordable options that still perform adequately. Maybe that's my Dutch side showing :)

streaming is a fickle thing, what works for one may not work for another.
thats why i first stated the i5 comment you quoted.

$269.99 is the current price of the i7-4770k at microcenter.

i got my MSI Mpower motherboard for $189.99 then the i7-3770k for 219.99 and had two $20 off coupons. making the motherboard 169.99 and cpu 199.99. my round trip to my closest microcenter is 6hrs, not a trip i plan on making for another year or two. :P

Hah, talk about a difference! So you get a much better price, but you have to travel a huge distance. I usually let the parts be delivered to me, or I go to the store 30 minutes away from here. Sadly, I pay a lot more. The $390 I mentioned is probably the best price I can get the 4770K for around here :)

The price is not the same everywhere.
In Europe (Germany) we pay ~390$ for the 4770K boxed. Same with Motherboards, RAM and CPU-cooling. AMD is cheaper here, specially the GPUs (compared to Nvidia). And most people still dont care and get the powerful i7 just because they need the power and they like to have a bit more for the next big project/game/whatever. They save money and get an AMD GPU instead.

And it really depends on the game that you play and stream.
Something like World of Warcraft use 2 threads and one of them is just for sound. So my i7 is bored while i`m playing WoW, but i still get low FPS because 1 core/thread is on 100%. The only way to avoid this problem is OC - get the most out of your CPU that you can. I can stream, watch porn and do what ever i want, it will not affect WoW because i have 8 threads, but for pure singlecore performance you need an i5 or i7 with more than 4GHz :-)

No.. i5 for gaming.. AMD processors are too weak for gaming and bottleneck GPUs.

Sorry to tell you this, but you clearly don't know what bottlenecking is my friend. You should do some research about it :)

Amd 8350 CPU here, streaming in 1680x1050 no downscale and no problems at all on twitch. Battlefield, dayz, arma3. You name it. Only problem is i'm not a partner with twitch so if people don't have a good bandwith well the stream will lag for them because they can't change the quality.

Amd cpu's are actually the best ones if you want to stream on the same pc that you are gaming on.

Ok games run better on intel, but that's because games are optimized for single core performance and not multi core. If the game runs on a newer amd cpu, then you can stream it without a problem.

But yes if you compare a phenom x4 against an i7 it's logic that the i7 will be better. Pfff compare a prius to a lambo.

Btw are you aware that the phenom was realeased in 2009. 2009 man. Of course it can't keep up with 2013/2014 games and stream them >_<

I'm pretty sure I know what it is.. and it all comes down to what CPU you got..

Dollar for dollar, I'm not convinced AMD is worth it for gaming any more. Let alone at the i5 level and up where Intel straight up dominates. Let alone streaming and gaming on the same PC, which is FAR better on an i5 or i7, despite what he says. From all the logs I've looked at on this site, the 8350 has far less performance. Its only worth it if your budget is highly constrained, and that's less and less true every month. Hell, if you get a Haswell you can use Quicksync and then there should be absolutely no debate.
