Does Limiting My Game to 120 FPS Improve a 60 FPS Stream?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to figure out how to make my stream run smoother. I’ve noticed that sometimes my gameplay stutters, and I’m not entirely sure why. I’m using a 144 Hz G-Sync monitor and a dual-PC setup with a capture card, but I don’t think the hardware setup is really the issue here.

What I have noticed is that my stream occasionally stutters, and I’ve heard multiple times now that it can be better to limit your game to 120 FPS when streaming at 60 FPS, so that the framerate divides cleanly. That got me thinking…

Basically, I have two questions:

1. Should I set my monitor to 120 Hz for this, or does the refresh rate not matter as long as I cap my game at 120 FPS?

In other words, is it enough to keep my monitor at 144 Hz and only limit the in-game FPS to 120?

2. Can I keep G-Sync enabled while streaming, or does that cause problems?

Theoretically, the “best” setup (from what I’ve heard) would be: G-Sync on, game locked to 120 FPS, monitor at 144 Hz, and OBS streaming at 60 FPS. But I’m not sure if that’s actually correct or if it can cause microstutters.

If anyone has experience with this or knows what the ideal setup is for smooth gameplay and a smooth stream, I’d really appreciate the advice!

I'll share what I do.

Only run 30, 60, 120, 240, 360 refresh rates.

I'll adjust Frame-rate depending on the source if I want a flawless recording. But, normally 30, 60, 120, or 240. I can record 360FPS but can't edit in Vegas, 240 is the limit.

Only cap if there's rendering lag & only cap enough to eliminate the lag.

Fixed Monitor tech, no G-sync.

No stutters on my rig with OBS.
