Question / Help Black Screen w/ Game Capture

I am well-aware I'm not the first to have this problem, but whenever I try to record my games I get a black screen. Audio is going fine, but there's no video. I only have one graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760) so it's not a matter of having the wrong one selected.

I want to clarify something now. This was not a problem when I first downloaded it. I looked up a video on the best settings, followed most of the instructions, STILL worked fine. The video was kind of...jerky, but at least it was there. But flash forward a couple days I hadn't used it cause I was testing other stuff, it won't record. MAYBE I tweaked something in the settings, but I honestly don't recall doing that.

Windows is fully updated, I have the right GFX card selected, I can't think of any other causes.

Okay, so I fixed it, but I want to help anyone else with this problem. I launched my game (Skyrim, in this case), then minimized it. THEN I opened OBS. Do not have it running before hand. Then I re-opened skyrim with Game Capture set up, and used my 'Record' hotkey.
Now, even though I fixed the problem, there shouldn't have been a problem to fix in the first place. So, OBS, please find a way to fix this.

I have the same problem. I haven't tried with Skyrim (not home at the moment, so I can't test it)
But have been with ESO (Elder Scrolls Online).
Are you playing Skyrim with fullscreen or windowed?
I open up ESO first, in window mode so I can keep an eye on OBS, I have just been leaving the window open, then opening OBS, two months ago I had no black screen, now I do.
Am I doing something different to you?
If you do as I am doing, does it still work, or do you end up with the black screen?

I run it in full screen. When the game is open, right click on the Game Capture and select properties. At the top it should have ESO selected. If not, change it. Then it should work. Hope this helps!!

smilejos67 I believe that is an out of memory error that you are getting...that GPU is pretty bad. Are you sure you're not running anything else that might be drawing GPU power?

Also your "older" log only has a Monitor capture in it, no Game capture.

I recorded a few minutes with Moniter capture with ESO on fullscreen. I closed everything except OBS, ESO, notepad, windows explorer.
Video is blackscreen.
https://gist.github.com/0b5ecf88ca1cb972cd3e

I see in it, "Failed on NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800: 0x80004002. Trying compatibility mode"
I see the one I above that I said was from May when it worked, is actually June's - sorry.
This is May's: https://gist.github.com/787023c0f362eb98a9bc

I don't get it. Reading the log it looks like in May it failed, yet I have videos to prove it recorded very well.
Here is the evidence: http://youtu.be/OuxppzldSLw

I have discovered that I have 32bit and 64bit OBS.
I have some recording that has worked with the 32bit, but it still says: "00:13:22: D3D10CreateDeviceAndSwapChain1: Failed on NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800: 0x80004002. Trying compatibility mode."

I set it to game capture, that doesn't work (black screen)

If I try to make an guess on what is happening.
OBS is failing to hook into the graphics card.
OBS is compensating under window mode when I set it to ESO window.
But with game capture it is dependent on the video card, because that is failing - I get the black screen.

With the one that works, I have the task manager open in the corner so I can see the CPU usage - it doesn't go higher than 38% and physical memory 52%. It appears to be dropping up to a third of the frames, I say the frame rate drop to 8fps for a second.

Summary: 32bit works, 64bit doesn't, game capture doesn't, window capture does.
Graphics card is not up to it. Quad core CPU is - but I should change the settings?

Is this enough stuff to work out why it doesn't work as it should?

Maybe you're over thinking it. Use Game Capture instead of Monitor Capture or anything else. Then it will specifically record the game. Make sure that check box is the only one selected, and that it is set up to record ESO.
Next time you want to record something, you'll have to open the game, minimize it, right click on the Game Capture, select 'Properties', make sure ESO is selected, close properties, then record. Every time I record, I go through the same steps. It's a lot faster than it sounds.
If this doesn't work, I'm not sure what the problem is. I do hope you figure it out soon, though.

All I can say is to try full screen mode. When you do that, it'll still look like a black screen, but when you maximize the game again, it will change. I'm sorry I couldn't be more help

Sorry Cole, it recorded a black screen.
log file: https://gist.github.com/2a99f2acad5cdd7fe95a

It always has this line:
16:10:39: D3D10CreateDeviceAndSwapChain1: Failed on NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800: 0x80004002. Trying compatibility mode

I wonder if it is the graphics card? And if there is something in the settings that should be changed?

I was fiddling with the some of the settings.
Now this has happened:

It looks like the video is split into mismatched boxes. I was recording in windows mode. I have had it happen before.I fixed it once before - not sure what I did, do you know what causes this?

I watched that video when I was first setting things up.
Changing the settings makes not difference to game capture = black screen, or the weird split image I have now under the windows capture.

Maybe I have a faulty graphics hook, I tried reinstalling OBS, it errored on one of the files.
I'm not out for the evening, I'll try reinstalling it later, and take a snapshot of the error message.

smilejos67, your GPU is very old, and the error I keep seeing in your logs is an out-of-memory error. I think running OBS on your GPU is not really much of a possibility.

Also don't use Imageshack for images, use imgur.com instead.
