Question / Help AverTV vs Capture Game vs Capture Monitor

While streaming Guild Wars 2 I noticed something funny... with the help of Bandicam to see the FPS >>

No capture at all: 50-55 FPS (while streaming, yes black screen)

Capture through AverTV HD DVR (HDMI Source directly from video card): 40-43 FPS
Capture through "Capture Monitor": 37-39 FPS
Capture through "Capture Game": 47-50 FPS

Wait what? I thought capturing through a video capture card would be less intensive, i mean sure, if I wanted to show my whole monitor it'd be a great option to get a bit more FPS (not that many for the $ spent though).

From what I know, Guild Wars 2 is more CPU intensive than GPU dependant, my GTX 770 4 GB is at 47-60% most of the time under 55% so yeah. My CPU being an Intel 4770k @ 3.5 Ghz is always under 60%, streaming from 1080p to 720p @ 30 fps, I have the internet and hardware to do 1080p @ 30 fps but yeah I'm not a partner of Twitch so 720p is good for most viewers for now.

Hmmm... what do you think of the performance of the diferent capture methods?

Have you seen the diference with diferent capture cards such as avermedia live gamer hd? (most twitch streamers have this one)

Capture cards are useless in a single PC setup. They pull the image off your GPU, then have to send it to your RAM and CPU, causing some system load. Game Capture, on the other hand, pulls directly from the GPU and sends it directly to be encoded without any middle steps. Game Capture (and Window Capture with Aero enabled) are literally as fast and efficient as you can be.

Capture cards should only be used to capture consoles, in 2 PC setups, or if you have a really stubborn game that just does not want to be captured (usually ones with very aggressive anti cheats, or older games)

People used to use capture cards on single PC setups back when streaming programs had very inefficient capture methods, but that's not the case with things today. Everyone's learned better ways!

Oooh I thought it would perform better since it is sold as the "free your cpu from processing the shiz", that makes sense. Guess from now on I'm using capture game and when streaming console games then I'll use the capture card, good to know :)

Don't know why most streamers think these cards do wonders with the PC games, I mean some people use it for Final Fantasy XIV and such :/ even though Game Capture works with it. Heh, guess we got trolled by Avermedia or other streamers providing false information.

It only frees your CPU from work if you use the onboard hardware encoder, which OBS doesn't support. Not that you would want to use it anyway, pretty much all consumer level hardware encoders are very poor quality and you have to offset it by throwing massive amounts of bitrate at the image. They can be great for local recording, for later editing and uploading, but not really for streaming.

It's not really false information, just a misunderstand of what the proper usage scenarios are. Frankly, it wasn't that long ago where using a capture card was pretty much a necessity because of how inefficient screen capture methods used to be. It's understandable people haven't made that adjustment just yet.

Guess we should spread the word, for example I bought my capture card because of people in Twitch using it to stream, could of saved about $200 off that lol. But guess it's better to have it than not having it, since as you stated, some games some times do not want to be captured u.u (minority though :P)

Glad non the less, because as you stated, the AverTV has some graphic issues (lines) on the video, watch an example here, it can stream on 1080i but not 1080p so guess thats the kicker.

And there are still people who will try to convince you otherwise since they payed money so it cant be true that it was wasted, right? ;p
