Add multichannel audio

Please note:
I'm very new to this audio thing so pros please be a little patient with me.

I recently got a job recording audio and this prompted me to upgrade my setup from junk mixer carrying game sound and mics to a USB audio interface (this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/focusrite-scarlett-8i6-usb-audio-interface) that took game sound and mics.

The advantage is it can record multiple tracks and it sounds SO NICE. The problem is I've found getting one clear stereo sound out of it to be a pain in the behind.

My advice? Make OBS compatible with interfaces that have more than 2 channels, allow us to mix in the ones we want and the ones we don't.

If anyone knows this stuff better please speak up!

Unrelated note: I feel very demanding when I ask for things on free programs but the people behind OBS seem nice, so I went for it!

Thanks for OBS, it rocks.

Do you think you could be more specific as to exactly what you mean? I have a good idea I think of what you're saying, however could you give me an example?

I would like it if OBS recognized these devices as ones that are capable of multi-track recording and allowed the user to mix the various sound channels from within OBS to make a stereo mix.

I would like to agree with the OP, however I'd like to see a built in software based audio mixer first. I'll mock up what I mean in photoshop and send you an email Jim. Something that would be scene-specific that would provide much better mixing.

For example: Populate the mixer windows sound channels as sources are added to a scene. This may be difficult to accomplish as I'm not sure if you can intercept the audio from an app like you do with the "Game Source" or window capture with video. If you can, then Adding a Game Source to a scene would capture it's game audio and allow you to mix it's volume, stereo balance, audio ducking, etc. rather than capturing simply everything being output via the selected audio output device.

This concept would make OBS more flexible so you could add support for hardware multi-channel inputs like the OP asked for in a similar manner to how you handle capture cards, webcams, etc. as video input sources.

It is impossible to use sound streams from various specific applications unless it's done on driver level, where OBS will never be operating. As for physical audio device input sources with their own volume setting, I do believe that this is planned.

paibox - Well actually it can be done by doing a game-capture-like hook on each app and intercepting the sound similar to how game capture intercepts the graphics.

While that's true, (and didn't we discuss this already?) wouldn't it be dependent on the game/application actually using DirectSound, rather than some other audio library to interface with Windows' sound system? I do believe that it would also be impossible to intercept at all for games that use OpenAL, or other ways to bypass the Windows mixer.
