Question / Help XCom Enemy Unknown works but Enemy Within does not?

Hi there,

I was about to start streaming Xcom Enemy Within today and had a strange problem that kept me from being able to do it. I first set up Xcom Enemy Unknown to stream on Twitch with OBS, and it worked fine. I used game capture like I normally do, and it worked like a charm. I then realized that Enemy Unknown was the original game, and I actually meant to stream Enemy Within, and when I created a new source using game capture on Enemy Within, OBS captures ONLY the mouse cursor and no other game video. The rest of the game capture is just a black screen.

I stream on an MSI GT70 gaming laptop, and I've had black screens before, but ever since I changed the NVidia settings to run OBS on the High performance graphics card, I've not had any issues until today. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with any game, or xcom specifically, capturing ONLY the mouse cursor and no other game video? The audio seems to be captured fine as well, just no video capture of the actual game. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I uploaded a log file of a short session where I changed the game capture from Enemy Unknown to Enemy Within, in case that helps.

Has nobody ever had a game capture only the mouse and not the rest of the video? I feel like this is something I've heard of before, but I don't know what I should do to try to fix that.

I'm also using OBS v0.657b on Windows 8, 64 bit, if that makes a difference. Would using OBS multiplatform or some other version of OBS have any chance of resolving this issue?

I did do some searching, although thank you for that link. I tried the F12 trick for capturing, but that still only captures the game mouse and no actual game video. After reading through the posts you linked, I also tried checking the "custom x264 encoder settings" under the advanced settings, but I'm still only seeing a black screen with the blue game mouse pointer on screen. There's an empty box under the x264 option, I don't know if I should be inputting anything there or not.

I also just tried changing the video encoding from x264 to Nvidea NVENC, and also to Quick Sync. After restarting OBS after each change and previewing the stream with each different setting, I get the same result: mouse pointer is captured, no other video is displayed on obs, just the black screen.

I don't know then. Maybe search for more X-Com type links. I was pretty sure I saw that problem on these forums before, with a solution.

I did find this one post where a person mentions this similar problem while trying to stream league of legends: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/black-screen-only-showing-pointer.12652/ The thread kind of faded out with the responses saying there's no way to fix it. This seems strange to me because I've never had a game where I couldn't come up with some way to capture it with OBS. Fixing the NVidia settings made OBS work beautifully for any game I've tried to stream UNTIL Xcom enemy within. I almost think there's some issue with the way that enemy within and enemy unknown start up from the same launcher through Steam. Maybe there's some conflict there that blocks the video for the expansion, but not the original game. I may have to just give up on streaming Enemy Within and wait to stream XCom 2 when it comes out.

If you are capturing game window you need to check "Enable alpha blending" in source properties.

Ok, just checked "enable alpha blending" under the "use hotkey" settings, and I'm still getting the same result. When I hit f12 to capture the game, only the mouse pointer is captured, still no video =/ Thanks for the suggestion, let me know if there's anything else I should try.
