Workstation Shutting Down

I've been using OBS for a while (recording only) with no problems. A few weeks ago I upgraded to Windows 11. Now, after 3-5 minutes of recording, my workstation turns off! I have a dual monitor and am recording the second monitor. If I start OBS with a blank screen, no problem. When I display a source, the computer will shutdown after 3-5 minutes. This is true even if I am NOT recording. or there is no video on the second screen (just a static screen).

I've upgraded the graphics drivers. I tried compatibility mode (and turned back off), safe mode/normal mode, but nothing seems to make a difference.

There is no crash logs; I've uploaded the log file. Please help!

need link to log file

Are screen refresh rates the same, and even multiple of recording FPS? (ie NOT 144MHz screen refresh and 60FPS.. if I understand others posts correctly... and for this, I might be misunderstanding... ymmv)

Yea, I'm avoiding Win11, still.. Too much standard every other Windows OS desktop release for since Windows ME in late 90's... complete PoS half-transition garbage. Clearly Win11 is still a work-in-progress ... gonna be interesting to see what happens when Win10 support is supposed to end.

*IF* your setup isn't too complicated...or at least for testing... I'd be inclined to either setup up a new/test OBS Studio Profile, and some simple Scene setup; limited, to no, plugins; etc. and test again... to help narrow down issue/cause

I don't know if this might help or not, but after decades of enterprise OS support experience, I'd also consider a fresh install of OBS Studio... never know if OBS Studio installer made choices for Win10, and doesn't handle in-place OS upgrade (I'm assuming in-place vs fresh OS install).. If fresh OS install, ignore this paragraph

What does your Windows OS System Event Log indicate? such a cold crash is usually hardware related. Presuming system is otherwise stable, in this case, I'd be curious about your sources and plugins, with hardware interaction... but just guessing. I'd suggest reviewing your OBS Studio log and look for Sources you don't use anymore (or aren't plugged in, etc) and remove them. Look for old plugins that might need updating.

Doh! Here's the link: https://obsproject.com/logs/nWmQBmiWdVsuOZW9
For the screen refresh rates, are you talking about 60 Hz for the monitors? Both are set as such.

Win10 support is supposed to end next year?

I did an in-place OS upgrade, and as part of troubleshooting, I did uninstall and reinstall OBS, although I did keep the settings during the uninstall.
I don't really see anything in the System event logs - I will take a closer look.

My setup is very basic, so I can create a simple Studio profile.

Thank you for your help!

Tried a couple more things - did a uninstall again, but removed everything, and then reinstalled.
Based on the log file, removed these plug-ins:

The log file is cleaner, but still OBS still shuts down my computer when I am displaying a window capture (and not streaming or recording) . I

I've not used an AMD GPU for this sort of work... and there is a long documented history of caveats, etc. not my area of expertise... probably worth looking into (making sure you have right driver(s) and associated settings)

I see you have both Window Capture and Display Capture. Does crash happen regardless of which capture type used?

As just Recording, have you tried Recording a Display Capture in native resolution (no re-scaling.. ie 1440p)?

I've been using Window capture and that fails. I had the Display capture by mistake.
I did try setting video resolution in OBS to 1920X1080 and also setting the display resolution to 1920 x1080, but no help.

What is interesting is that I do not have to record to cause the failure. If I select Window Capture and select an active window, after 4-5 minutes my computer will shut down. As I'm writing this, I realize that I've always had a video running the window being captured. After I post this I will test with capturing a static window and see if the computer still shuts down...

Started OBS, selected Window Capture and selected Outlook as the Window. Computer still shut down... :-(

Some additional data points. Hopefully this helps. I used Display Capture to capture the second monitor. I can watch a YouTube video and actually record it (over 30 minutes) as long as I don't watch the video in full screen mode. When I put the YouTube video in full screen mode (in the second monitor), the computer shuts down after a couple of minutes. (This is while OBS is on monitor 1 during a Display Capture of monitor 2.)

Radeon Pro GPU driver? If so the driver you currently have installed was updated/replaced the same day it was released. Since that day (8/24/23) it's been updated an additional (14) times. AMD drivers suck, I'd start there....

I think I downloaded the latest from AMD. Device manager says the driver date is 8/24/23 but when I use the AMD tool, it sayd I am using
Driver Version
23.10.18.06-230824a-395307C-INTERNAL-AMD-Software-PRO-Edition and
AMD Windows Driver Version
31.0.21018.6011

Computer still shuts down...

I've been installing the drivers from the same link you provided. I'll give DDU a shot. Out of curiosity, how did you determine/suspect a driver conflict?

Can't tell from the log if but if you ran DDU, it doesn't leave anything behind. But, according to the new log, the driver is the same version as the earlier logs. So is it a driver issue, W11 issue or something else altogether?
22:12:21.363: Driver Version: 31.0.21018.6011

Is it too late to rolllback to W10? I'm still on 10, works great, never had issues. I won't touch 11 with a 10' pole.

How about OBS, what version were you using before the windows update? Have you tried it?

Something that you might want to take a look at if you haven't done so already. Mobo, did you check the support page to make sure there wasn't any major BIOS/Driver updates needed to run W11?

More info. I found a backup OS drive before the Win11 upgrade. The drive is from 12/19. Computer still shut down. 2024-01-03 16-02-54 is the associated log. The last time I successfully ran OBS and recorded video was on 11/2/23. I've attached the log from that date, if it helps.
Since it still fails with Win 10 and OBS v 29.1.3, I suspect it is not related the OS or OBS version... what else can I check?

I don't think it was working all that great back on 11/2/23 either & would not call many of those recordings successful. Most have like 90% encoding lag.

Check your Windows logs see if there's anything that might shed some light on what's going on, this clearly is not an OBS issue.

I found 24 FPS helped vs 30 FPS. Yes results not perfect but workable. But much better than the shutting down that happens now! Will check the Windows logs... thanks for your help.
