Question / Help Window capture with additional black area - normal?

I have a rookie level question about the window capture mode. I'm recording a game that runs in a small window and you can't resize it any way. Is OBS supposed to record also all the "empty" screen area as a black background into the video? I thought the window capture was supposed to only record the chosen window and crop the recorded video to the size of it, but I guess I was wrong?

If the huge black borders are normal, what do you usually do in terms of making the video watchable? Just crop with editing program, or is there a way to fix the problem via some certain settings during recording?

Window capture auto-crops the source to the shape of the chosen window, then stretches it to fit the size you've defined.
If you're getting black bars even with the window capture source set to fit to screen, it's because your window doesn't match the size of your base resolution.

The only ways to get rid of the black bars are to either set your base resolution to match the window (which some streaming services MAY reject due to the non-standard resolution) or put some filler images in the space.
