Everything in obs displays just fine except for the fact that any window that i try to do a window capture for just shows up as a black box in the preview or on stream.

make sure to post your log file. :)
for me, it was 2 things. I was streaming on a laptop with dual gfx (nvidia & intel). had to go into the nvidia settings and specify nvidia as the primary adapter for both the game and obs.
the second possibility could be that you need to run window capture with compatibility mode.
what game are you trying to play btw?
