Question / Help Win7 Macbook, USB & XCapture-1

I'm currently using OBS for game capture on a 4 year old PC. I'm not having any issues and OBS has been a great boon for my needs.

I've got a new Macbook Pro 15 and run Windows 7 via Bootcamp and I'm able to capture with OBS at higher quality. My plan now is to buy a video capture box for backing up old vhs tapes, Sky tv recordings, and maybe console output.

The XCapture-1 http://www.solarisjapan.com/xcapture-1-usb-3-0-hd-capture-unit/ seems to fit my needs perfectly for capturing up to 1080p60.

The issue I have is that it apparently requires a Renesas or Intel usb 3.0 controller, and I'm not entirely sure what the Macbook has. In OS X it appears to show it uses a Broadcom controller, but in Windows it seems to use the The Intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver.

If anyone has knowledge which controller is in the Macbook, or compatibility of the XCapture-1 I'd appreciate the info. :)

If it shows up in Windows as an Intel USB 3.0 controller, then I'm pretty sure it should work. I don't know for 100% sure, though.

This seems to be what Windows implies, but OS X doesn't mention Intel so I want to be sure before I place the order.

Damn, I frankly can't find out enough info. I'm not really sure what to tell you, maybe you should call the people at Apple as they would be able to tell you for sure.

I spoke to Apple Support, they think it's not an Intel controller but if it's using Intel's eXtensible driver it should, in theory, be compatible with the XCapture-1.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. It would be good to know why other usb controllers won't work in the first place. I'll have to hold off a purchase at this point as I don't want an expensive door stop :)

I have used an Xcapture-1 on a 2012 retina macbook pro and it works fine!

lol yeah. I did email Intel support as well but they couldn't say for sure what controller was used.

I would buy an ExtremeCap U3 from AVerMedia for that: it's using standard USB3, should work with anything.
I don't think Apple computers are using a Renesas USB3 controller, it was more found in the first PC motherboards.
(and it was quite buggy, by the way, you need a specific driver from Renesas to have it work normally on Windows)
You can try to find out by searching all your Apple chips references on Google... finding the chips from ifixit teardowns.

Just wanted to update this, as I did eventually purchase the XCapture-1 / XSync-1 bundle and ( now I've the latest driver ) it's working fine on the Macbook running Win7 in Bootcamp.

It's a slightly moot point with OBS going multi-platform, but I can't see an OS X driver for XCapture-1 coming anytime soon so I'm glad of the option, even if the Macbook runs a little toasty.
