I've been reading this article. They mention that VP9 uses half of the bandwidth for the same or even better quality than H264 and that VP10 will cut that same bandwith in half again.

My question is why would everyone still use H264 when there are already better options out there, in terms of both quality and bandwidth use?

Wouldn't it be more sensible option for Twitch to use codecs that require less bandwidth and offer better quality?

The CPU power required to encode VP9, HEVC, etc at real time frame rates is not available to most people.

It would actually work, specially with dualPC setups and for people sitting on the X99 plattform right now... Still no support, thats really sad...

You gotta realize that quite a bunch of ppl still got potatoes for computers. They don't play games themselves, they watch other ppl play.

As long as only a small percentage of people have setups that can do real-time encoding with VP9 or HEVC, twitch is not going to consider supporting it. Assuming you can use these codecs with RTMP.

For recording you can already do HEVC and VP9 with obs multiplatform, if you replace the included ffmpeg with a build that supports these codecs.
