Question / Help Volume Discrepencies over Skype

I've been streaming various games using OBS on twitch, and I have a problem when streaming with a friend. We talk over Skype, and on some games, like Minecraft, his volume is perfect over skype and on-stream. However, on other games, like Dead Island, his volume is perfect over Skype, but on the stream it is super low.

What settings do I need to change so that his volume is correct over both stream and skype?

If you need to increase volume beyond the norm for whatever reason, then you should probably use "mic boost" in audio settings.

Things I would try:

Disabling the game's in-game voice chat option. (I know Dead Island has one, perhaps it's interfering in some way)
Not letting Windows control the volume on detection of communication. (On Windows 7: Right click the speaker in the bottom right, click "Sounds" then go to the "Communications" tab, make sure "Do nothing" is selected)

Anything not coming through on the Mic channel (your mic) will be run through the System channel. If you're using any kind of a lower game volume in OBS to make yourself clearly audible, it'll also lower your friend's audio as well.

Easiest way to rectify is to leave the Desktop volume at 100%, and turn down the game master volume in the in-game options. Note that this may make it difficult to hear in-game audio prompts; I've had to swap to headphones on numerous occasions to counteract that.
