Hey!

I have just found Video Bitrate Calculator. I checked in which resolution I should stream with my bitrate - 1650 (step 2 of calculator). It showed me that I should stream in 480p. Till now I was streaming in 960x600 not much bigger but bigger.

For example. Twitch recommends this settings:
  • Recommended bitrate for 1080p: 3000-3500
  • Recommended bitrate for 720p: 1800-2500
  • Recommended bitrate for 480p: 900-1200
  • Recommended bitrate for 360p: 600-800
  • Recommended bitrate for 240p: Up to 500
I checked by this calculator a basic settings for 720p which are:
video/stream resolution: 1280x720
fps: 30
bitrate: 1800
Resulting bits per pixel: 0.06510416666666667

Bits per pixel explained:

< 0.10: Don't do it.
0.10 - 0.15: It will look bad.
0.15 - 0.20: You will notice blocks, but it will look okay.
0.20 - 0.25: It will look really good.
0.25 - 0.30: It won't really improve visually.
> 0.30: Don't do that either - try a bigger resolution instead.

According to the "table" above 1800 bitrate it's not good enough for 720p. So question is simple. Do you trust it or not?

Best regards,
Dominik

The calculator or the twitch list, both have pretty much the same problems. Different factors influence the needed bitrate for a "good" looking stream. The content itself being probably one of the biggest factors, is it a fast paced shooter with a lot of effects, or a slow paced strategy game, or maybe just showing some photoshop work.
The preset is another factor that will change the quality without chaging the bitrate. Also, the mentioned "good" looking can be different from person to person. In general, those lists or tools help you to get a rough idea of what should be possible within your available upload speed. Then the hardware and other factors decide the final used resoluion, framerate and bitrate.

You are right @Jack0r about content (fps, rts, mmo and others). But still comparing basic settings like fps, resolution, bitrate to twitch recommendations and video bitrate calculator difference is pretty big. That's why I asked guys and girls what you're thinking about it :)

@Jack0r Look according to this screen from twitch analyzer. It seems that video bitrate calculator is more correct that twitch recommendations. I'm taking about "quality check".
