Question / Help Trouble recording full screen games.

So, I've been trying for the last hour or so to get OBS recording, but I'm still receiving nothing but a black screen when I try to record or preview full screen games.

If I Alt+Tab out of these games, OBS works fine, capturing a perfect image of my desktop and the OBS window, plus anything else I have running in the background, but upon Alt+Tabbing back into the game it goes back to recording just a black screen.

I've attempted to change the Video Adapter, but there's only the one option (Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000), and similarly trying to attempt something similar to the advice given for nvidia options yields nothing of any use, or at least there's no useful options in the Intel Control Panel. It also fails to pick up sound from the game.

If there's any second graphics card on my laptop (HP Pavillion g6), I can't find any of the specifics of it in Device Manager or the Intel Control panel, and I can't select the game in "Window Capture" mode, while "Compatibility Mode" is greyed out when trying to use the "Monitor Capture".

When I use the "Analyse Current Log" option, it claims what I'm trying to record isn't a game.

No sources found​

You do not appear to have added any sources to your scenes which will result in black output from OBS. Please read the help file or use one of the getting started guides from the guides forum for help setting up OBS.​

1 issues found (1 major, 0 minor).​


Under sources you need to make sure you have added a "Game Capture" source and then select the games window from the selection/drop-down (have the game running at the same time of course).

Out of the box OBS isn't going to pick up games automatically - you have to add sources for them. Either as a "global source" or just within the main box that says "Sources"

have you watched the stream on a separate device? Still black? I run source games in windowed no border mode. Works well. Alt tabs might be killing your capture. Set a hot key for start/stop stream. Disable preview and watch the stream from another device. I would disable the preview once you are watching it from another device. Lastly let key frames to 2 (not auto).
lastly, did you just put in some random numbers for your bitrate/ buffer? Set it.to 80% of your upload speed maximum of 2500/2500 for 720@30

have you got anything open in the back ground fraps or anthing like that
make sure you dont have both versions of obs running
aif yuor on 7 try disabeling aero

If you meant Steam Broadcasting, it's disabled.

I've tried dping's solution with windowed but no borders, which works, but is not ideal due to me being able to see the desktop behind which can be a bit distracting. Worse comes to the worse I'll make do, but I wouldn't say no to any more suggestions.

isnt that the reason for the black screen? Does anyone know how to fix that? I have nothing else running in the background.

I get the same error on the log:

WARNING: Another hook is already present while trying to hook d3d9.dll, hook target is unknown. If you experience crashes, try disabling the other hooking application

isnt that the reason for the black screen? Does anyone know how to fix that? I have nothing else running in the background.
Please don't necro old threads. "unknown" hooks are usually considered safe because the software "hooking" isn't on or enabled. If it shows the hook software name and directory, then yes, it could typically hinder OBS.

Can the mods maybe add this response to the FAQ ? (Cos its late and I am going to bed soon) and I have already posted on some other black screen threads.

If you get black screen trying to record a game, or stream, turn off AA (Antialiasing). I had this issue with one DX11 game, and fixed it by turning off AA.

Maybe this could be investigated ?, It might be an AMD issue (I use an R9-380), or a DirectX issue in windows, or a game client issue, I do not know.
