I'd like to stream PlanetSide 2 but I'm wondering if my three-year-old computer is up to the task:
OBS Log here. I ran the log through the analyzer but it came up with nothing major.
If I use the Veryfast preset, picture quality is decent, but my CPU usage and framerate suffer. PS2 is a lot harder to play with framerates below 60 FPS, and I want to keep as close to that framerate as possible while streaming. I switched to the Superfast preset (used in the video), and while CPU usage is better, picture quality is a lot worse. Using Beandog's x264 preset reference, I tried tweaking some advanced settings as shown in the log. It didn't seem to make much difference.
I've tried downscaling to 540p but text and HUD elements become almost illegible. I've lowered the streaming framerate to 20 FPS but it made no discernible difference in CPU usage. The NVENC and QuickSync encoders look just plain awful. I can turn up the bitrate but it's already at 2800 kbps. I've locked CPU affinities for the game (cores 0-1) and OBS (cores 2-3) but I can't tell if that's had an effect. I also adjusted OBS's process priority to Above Normal.
I'm thinking my expectations may be unrealistic. I've streamed a couple other games - Ziggurat and Hard Reset - and they look acceptable. PS2 just seems to have a lot more motion and complexity. Maybe it's time for a hardware upgrade so I can run a higher preset while keeping a good in-game framerate?
