Question / Help [SOLVED] Trying to sort out OBS Settings on my new PC

For reference, I recently (literally this saturday the 13th) built a new PC. It is as follows:

  • Intel i7 4770k CPU (3.5ghz normally, OCed to 3.9ghz)
  • 16gb DDR3 Ram (1600mhz)
  • GTX 970 4gb GPU
  • 2 HDDs (500gb and 1TB)

I used OBS previously to create videos for my youtube channel, as I enjoy the ease of use that it provides and the amazing compression it has built in (300mb for a 45min .flv file? YES)

But since I have reinstalled it...I cant seem to figure out how I got it to work as good as it did! My PC is now capable of easily doing 720p 60FPS now (and thats the quality I want) so I want to make sure I setup the recording parameters to get the maximum effect.

The games I play are generally at 1440x900 (my monitors support max resolution right) so there is that.

What do I need to change to get this to work right? Any help you guys can give me or suggestions of things to look into?

you could record with 1440x900 60fps as well. set the preset to superast, uncheck CBR, set buffer to 0.

Thanks I will give that a try. Any other settings like Bitrate I need to mess with or anything?
try those and post a log after you recorded for 5 minutes.

There it is.

And there is a second with more intense video just in case.
Your second log looked good besides one thing I forgot to mention: Enable Aero. It helps when you do a game capture.

setting the buffer to 0 unlocks the bitrate so no adjustments need to be made there, the encoder chooses the bitrate required for the recording, which should look great in your case.

How does the video look?

Seemed to pixalate actually. Also I realized I could possibly use the Shadowplay encoder in OBS...because I have a GTX 970 by NVidia.

My goal is 720p60fps for Youtube. That's my dream goal of course lol

did you ever enable aero? set quality balance to 10. if your target is 720@60,then downscale to 720p but keep the preset the game.

also, read this:

note to not go to low with the crf as it will seriously bring down many CPUs.

After you're done with a 5-10 minute test, post another log please.

Thanks for all the help I will take care of this when I get home tonight.

Also, I am going to try using the NVIDIA Shadowplay encoder and see what happens there and post a log file for that too. See if you can help me figure out which is better.

I have been using .flv for the file format, but I am going to switch to MP4 so I can actually edit the files easier in WMM 6.

Also what happens if I downscale 1440x900 to 720p? My monitor is native 1440x900 hence my asking.

your resolution of your recording will be 720p. that is all. you wont see any difference in your monitor. there is a better way to quickly convert FLVs since they are better in general,

Let me give it a try and see what happens.

CPU Encoding with the settings above (15 minutes, 1gb File Size) - https://gist.github.com/d0a0d3674ddda968ce6f
I turned down FPS to 30 and it looks fine enough. If I could get the file size down just a bit more I would be happy.

GPU Encoding with the settings above (12 minutes, 100mb File Size ) - https://gist.github.com/efefd5921c0379101c15
The way it turned out was HIGHLY pixalated and had lots of speed up and slow down 0_0

with that GPU encode, you need to set keyframes to above 0 option. no key frames will make a small file but I dont think the output can be read on youtube. Key frames is typically set to 2, but those are basically seek points every 2 seconds.

Fair enough. Any ideas on how to get the CPU encoding down a bit more in size without sacrificing too much in the way of visual fidelity or is that looking like the best I am gonna get?

The only way to do that is to drop the preset more, which with your CPU, you could use the faster preset, but typically, that is a waist since hard drive space is so cheap and cpu processing is sort of expensive.

In my case I am trying to get the size down for uploading purposes. My upload speed is rather low and while I am going to look into increasing it, I want to try to keep it manageable ya know?

I just realized I have no idea how to set Keyframes to 2 0_0 I cant find any solid info I guess my google-fu is weak.
