Question / Help Soft/Muddy Audio

Hello!

I'm getting soft and muffled audio when recording from any desktop audio device. My sound card (Asus Xonar D2X) has an internal loopback, and when I use this (passing desktop audio back into the mic input), everything sounds great. The downside is I have to point the desktop audio in OBS to a silent dummy and use the auxiliary for game audio. No mic now. :(

My encoding settings (x264) are as follows:

Codec: AAC (MP3 is always silent?)
Format: 48kHz, 44.1 doesn't make a difference. Ran through 44-192 on my sound card too.
Bitrate: Normally 160 for Twitch, but I've tried up to 320.
Channel: Stereo

I also have GX mode disabled, as I've read here that this can cause some trouble with Xonars.

Anybody have any thoughts on why everything sounds like it's coming through a pillow? It sounds different to me than a low bitrate, but I don't have enough experience to diagnose much else.

I can post a log later today if it'll help, thanks!

Mem: 16GB RAM
Video: GTX 770 + GTX 460
