Since Latest Update to OBS I can't record as keep getting "Encoder Overloaded"

I've been recording videos with OBS perfectly fine for many years, and have for the last two months been recording for the first time in 4K, all without issues after some initial teething trouble and having to look up several guides to optimise my recording settings in OBS to allow me to record in good quality and also be able to play the games at their highest quality and performance.

Yesterday when I launched OBS to do some livestreaming (Which I do on a separate profile to my recording profile, using only 1080p resolution) I was prompted that OBS had an update, so I installed it without questioning anything. OBS restarted after the update and I commenced with my streaming at 1080p just fine.

Today I switch back 4K Recording Profile to record a 30 minute video. I find after doing the recording the video is really laggy and choppy. I check the stats in OBS and see I was 84.8% Encoder Overloaded. I have tried changing a couple of settings on the recording side of things but everytime I click to start recording in OBS the Encoder is Overloaded. This wasn't the case before the update.

Here is my current log file: https://obsproject.com/logs/-KnzR0aVX4mAeUcR

Can anyone help me to fix this and be able to record again?

You're using the Streamfx variant of the nvenc encoder. Try using the native OBS nvenc implementation by changing the encoder to "NVIDIA NVENC H.264 (new)" and see what happens.

Re Cyclemat, firstly I not uninstalling my PCs internet security. OBS and Norton have been working fine together for me for several years now. This issue has only appeared since updating OBS last night.

I’m not rescaling on my Recording Profile. Base Canvas Resolution is set at 3840x2160 and that’s what I’m recording outputting the video two. No rescaling occurs on video record. Rescaling only happens on Streaming where I take my native PC Resolution and downscale it to 1080 as Twitch seems to prefer that then native 4K.

The Reason I’m using I420 and 709 Full is because I’m recording and capturing HDR and for that reason am not using NV12 and Partial.

Re Koala yes I’m using the StreamFX encoder. Have been for the last two months since switching over to recording/capturing in 4K HDR. Not had any issues with the Encoder or the settings in that time until this recent OBS update.
I have as a test switched back to using the OBS Nvenc Encoder and on High Quality Preset and Default CQP 20 I’m getting the same Encoder Overload issue the instant I hit the Start Record button.

OBS does not support HDR at all. Not for streaming, not for recording.
Even if it did, you're recording to 'main' profile h.264, which only supports 8-bit color, not 10-bit HDR.

Switch back to NV12 709 Partial as advised. Switch back to NVENC (new) as advised, at least for testing.
Otherwise, good luck, it sounds like you're on your own.

If you switch color format from i420 to nv12 + partial as advised, you get full hardware acceleration and zero copy nvenc, which is a performance boost, especially for such a huge data volume as 4k.

I've switched back to NV12 and Partial on my last test, at the bottom of the last posted log and still it's causing Encoder Overload.
I don't get it I've not changed any recording settings since I recorded 6 videos yesterday. Only thing in my setup that's changed is OBS has now updated to 27.2.1 and now it's not able to record. I'd be tempted to try uninstalling OBS and rolling back to the previous version if I still have a copy of it locally to see what happens.

You can use Norton but dont cry when it comes to problems when you take a Look on the teste

The defender make the same Job and didnt need so much resources.
But its your PC.

Like I say Cyclemat been using Norton on my PCs and Mobile for over 10 years never had issues with it. Been using Norton and OBS together on this PC for nearly 4 years without any issues. Yes Norton might use more resources then Microsoft Defender, but I'm not about to bin off a perfectly good working premium paid for security program to go back to using a free in built OS one that doesn't get as many regular updates, just to save a few MBs of ram usage. Also I've been using Process Lasso since last year to reduce and lower the resource use of programs like Norton and lower it's priority whilst going ahead and bumping and elevating things like OBS to be able to have priority over resources and more.

Whatever is causing my issue is down to the update to OBS I installed on my PC. That's the only thing that's changed on my PC in the last two months. Like I say I was recording perfectly fine yesterday with OBS and the StreamFX Encoder using their recommended settings, as I have been since December. Suddenly open OBS today after the update last night and now I'm getting EncoderOverload error despite now having changed all my settings to what has been recommended.

I'm using OBS NVENC Encoder and NV12Partial now and it's still broken and not working.

Okay this evening have completely uninstalled OBS and Plugins, even deleting the residual folders from the Program Files Folder and any folders/files within Users/Appdata on my PC.

I then reinstalled 27.1.3 Version of OBS Studio, ignoring the latest release 27.2.1 and then reinstalled my StreamFX Plugin. I can now record again with my original recording settings using any Encoder in OBS, either the default NVENC New or the StreamFX NVENC viaFFmpeg and it works fine no Encoder Overload issues at all.

So I'm going to have to assume there is something not right in the latest OBS Update because 27.2.1 definitely broke recording for me and rolling back to the previous version 27.1.3 immediately fixed the issue for me.

No it's not because as advised earlier I also switched to the OBS Nvidia NVENC H264 (new) Encoder option and could not get anything to record with that either, instantly getting Encoder Overload. Also if it was an issue with the Plugin how come I could stream perfectly fine? Just seems to me for whatever reason in the latest version of OBS Local Recording was completely broken for me and unable to record anything no matter what Encoder I tried or even if I tried the normal H264 Encoder and using the CPU instead of the GPU.

So rolled back to the previous version which was working perfectly fine for me and instantly Local Recording works again perfectly no Encoder issues. So I don't the reason for it, but for me, on my PC with my setup and settings, it seems the old version of OBS is the one I should keep using and I just won't update it for the time being.

did you delete the complete plugin folder ? when no rest of the not supported plugins can make problems !

best is delete the complete obs folder then make a new instalation your settings and scenes are save in the appdata folder

I complete removed everything related to OBS from my PC, all files and folders, all appdata folders too. Start completely clean with an install of the older version, made my scenes from scratch, entered the recording and streaming settings I had previously as displayed in the "High Quality Recordings with Nvenc" and "High Quality Steaming with Nvenc" guides by Xaymar and had no issues recording or streaming last night. So for now Version 27.1.3 seems to be the best one for my PC Environment where all features are working correctly, without error and as I have come to expect.

I'm a little bit disappointed today when I opened OBS I got a popup telling me I'd lose the ability to use Twitch Docks during streaming unless I upgrade to the newest version of OBS by the end of February, as they are dropping support for that in the version I'm using. Seems like OBS trying to force people to update to the new 27.2.1 version, even though as I have found it doesn't work correctly on my system and it loses functionality.

twitch end the api support and a new api must used but when you want to stay at the old version you can add manual browser docks.

bute nobody force here anything and i have the 27.2.1 installed and its works like a charme.

but i use only the windows Defender i have 3 systems and on all its run perfect !

Yes I can except maybe the StreamFX plugin and encoder might not work with the new version of OBS and requires an update. I did as instructed earlier in this thread, switch back to using the stand OBS Encoder instead. However that caused me the exact same issue where as soon as I tried to record it was dropping frames due to Encoder Overload. Messed around with different settings and presets of the OBS Encoder and finally got it to record without Encoder Overload, but the quality of the videos was so low it was unusable.

Like I say right now I've fixed my issue temporarily by rolling back my OBS version and uninstalling the new version. Hopefully if plugins and stuff get updated and patched pretty quickly. Hopefully I can transition over to the newest version of OBS in a couple of weeks time. For now however me and my workload need OBS to be recording. I can't afford to lose another two days where I got nothing recorded because I was trying to fix errors caused by an update. It was probably my own fault for updating straight away. I should know with any software you don't want to be an early adopter because that's where the problems are.
