Question / Help Should I be able to record with this spec?

Hi there guys,

I'm just starting to record some of my PS4 footage using the Elgato HD and OBS, but am running into a few issues! Generally trying to stream at 720p if possible!

I've read most of the troubleshooting threads and still need to experiment but I was wondering if my spec laptop is up to the job!

Originally was trying to use a 2008 iMac upgraded with 16gb of RAM but this wasn't that successful. I'm now trying with my MacBook Pro (Early 2011) with upgraded 8gb ram but occasionally I am still getting stuttering and frame drops. The only issue I can think of is that I'm running the MacBook through Boot Camp to use some Windows software on the webcam, but any suggestions would be welcome. I can post a new log file tomorrow evening if needed.

Even 4GB of RAM is enough, so that's not it. You should post the specs of your CPU and GPU instead.

That said, the Multiplatform version natively runs on Macs, you should try that instead.

The CPU is bad for encoding in that. It looks like only a dual core, you probably need a quad. I wouldn't expect great results, but you might be able to dial some things down and still get ok recordings.

Any recommendations for a cheapish desktop that would handle 720p recordings comfortably? I have managed to get some success using an old work laptop but any desktops under £200 that would be better suited? Thanks

Just recordings? Get a Nvidia GTX 750, 750Ti, or 900 series video card, and use NVEnc encoding. Should work with even quite inexpensive CPUs. Just make sure it minimally has 2 cores and hyperthreading (if Intel, for AMD get an octo-core). No idea how much £200 buys though.

Been offered a desktop (with monitor) with the following specs for £225:

-80+ Certified 650w 52A Single Rail Power Supply

Should it be able to handle the recordings better?

Question, why are you not using the Elgato software to record?

I was able to record 8000kbps on my old Laptop which had a 2.2 GHz dual Core with my Avermedia and the Avermedia software (pretty much the same as the Elgato).

With the recording I'm using the webcam output as well. I've not found a work around to eliminate the audio/video delay using just the Elgato software so if there is a workaround without OBS that'd probably do the job!

Fair enough, my preference would have been to take the two recordings (Webcam/Mic and Game) together when editing and sync them that way. But I'm afraid I'm no help as I never used OBS on my old Laptop :P.

That's not a bad suggestion, I'm always concerned about getting it synced up correctly. Is there any other software that you'd recommend that makes it fairly simple to edit?

I use Sony Vegas to edit videos. The other popular one is Adobe Premier Pro.

No problem man.

Yes, if you decide to go this route, it should. You could use NVEnc or Quicksync to unload the CPU for recordings. Which is important because its still a little light on the CPU horsepower to both record and play the game using x264 encoding. But it should be good if you can use NVEnc or Quicksync for the encoding part.
