Question / Help Severe FPS stutter in game whilst streaming

I stream TF2 frequently but have been receiving issues recently with FPS stuttering in game. When I stop streaming then the FPS is fine but when I am streaming my FPS frequently drops very low. This would be an issue for me if my computer was bad, but a few months ago my fps was fine whilst playing. My specs are:
  • AMD FX-8350 8-core @ 4.00 GHz

  • 8GB RAM

  • Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB

  • Samsung 840 Series 120GB SSD
I don't understand what the issue is and don't know how to fix it. I've tried reinstalling both OBS and TF2 but to no avail. Could anybody help with this?

What're your OBS settings? CPU Preset can create a HUGE impact on CPU performance. Very Fast seems to be the more commonly used preset. Also, what resolution/frame rate/downscaling are you using? Try lowering those settings and see if it helps with the stuttering in game.

By the way, next time just post a log file:

In general, source engine games try to produce as many frames as you have free ressources. So for example without streaming they sometimes run at 240fps or something like that. Now when you are streaming, you of course have less ressources. To manage those a bit better it can help to limit your framerate in TF2. For example on a 60hz monitor, to 60fps.
Then I have to mention that the AMD processors are, when it comes to gaming AND streaming, a bit inferior to the current Intel ones. So if limiting your FPS is not enough, you might have to lower the framerate in OBS to 30 for example or even increase the downscale slightly. 1.75 for example.
You will have to test a bit, for further questions, add a logfile of these tests :)

Post an OBS log file, not screenshots. Make sure the log is from an OBS session with at least five minutes of high action video.
