RTX 5090 – Stuttering in recordings despite smooth gameplay

Hello everyone,

I have a reproducible recording/capture issue with my RTX 5090.

System:

  • RTX 5090
  • Ryzen 9 9950X3D
  • ASUS ProArt X870E
  • 96 GB DDR5-6000
  • Windows 11 Pro

The actual gameplay is smooth, but the recorded video shows noticeable frame-pacing issues, micro-stutters and irregular motion.

The issue is not limited to OBS. It occurs with:

  • OBS Studio
  • NVIDIA App / ShadowPlay
  • Meld Studio
  • Windows Game DVR / Game Bar

I have already tested different drivers, recording settings, monitor configurations and capture methods.

Most importantly, my retailer/service provider was able to reproduce the same issue on a completely different system using a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, ROG Strix B850 and a different Zotac RTX 5090.

This makes me suspect a possible RTX 50-series / Blackwell driver or capture pipeline issue.

Has anyone experienced the same behavior with an RTX 5090?
Has anyone compared an RTX 5090 vs. RTX 4090 on the same system?

I can provide video examples if needed.

This issue seems to affect lately more and more people and nothing seems to be done to solve the actual problems. People on this forum will likely say that your settings suck or the classic "my OBS works fine".
I'll try to follow along this thread as well because I am having the same issues with my build and also a previous build, both really strong, where there should be no issues at all.

In my opinion, it can't be related to OBS, since I experience the same problem with ShadowPlay, Meld Studio, and Game Bar as well, even with the default settings.

The fact the same issue appears with the Nvidia App recordings too is extremely odd.

That said, there's a number of potentially benign reasonable explanations. Both a log from OBS (to understand your setup/config) and perhaps an example video with contextual explanation from you would help.

An example of a benign issue: a game running at around 90fps will never have good pacing or motion when recorded at 60fps, and can look choppy. This is why more context & info from you might be helpful.

So it turns out the problem intensifies if the game is running at 60 fps, problem doesn't go away after setting the refresh rate to 60hz. also the problem appears to not happen through the Nvidia app
Flashing warning for the videos

Thanks for the detailed response. I agree that the fact that the same behavior also occurs with NVIDIA App/ShadowPlay recordings is particularly strange.

Unfortunately, my PC is currently with the retailer/service provider, so I don't have access to it at the moment and therefore can't provide a fresh OBS log right now.

I have checked and analyzed OBS logs extensively in the past, though, and there was never anything indicating an error or an obvious performance/encoding problem. As far as the logs were concerned, everything looked normal.

I'll leave a link to my YouTube channel below, where you can see examples of the issue:

To describe the problem more precisely: the recording initially looks completely normal. After a random amount of time, a noticeable jitter/shaking starts to appear in the OBS preview. The timing is not consistent — sometimes it happens relatively quickly, sometimes much later. The important part is that this is not just an OBS preview issue: the same jitter/motion irregularity is also present in the resulting recording.

The actual game itself remains smooth while playing. The problem is therefore mainly visible in the capture/recording output.

Regarding your 90 FPS → 60 FPS example: I understand what you mean, but in my case I am specifically recording at 4K 60 FPS, and the entire setup is configured around 60 FPS. The monitors, in-game FPS limit, OBS recording settings, etc. are all configured accordingly. I have also tested different refresh rates and configurations, including 60 Hz, to rule out a simple frame-rate/frame-pacing mismatch.

The issue has also been reproduced by my retailer on a completely different system using another RTX 5090, which is one of the reasons I'm wondering whether this could be related to the RTX 50-series/Blackwell capture pipeline rather than my individual hardware.

The videos on my channel should give you a much better idea of what I mean by the jitter, since it is quite difficult to describe accurately in text.

Please keep us posted when/if you have any info on possible solutions.

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing almost exactly the same problems with a very similar system.

My hardware:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
  • ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 5090 OC
  • 64 GB DDR5-6000 CL30
  • ASRock X870E Taichi Creator
  • Windows 11
I'm recording gameplay in 4K60 using OBS and NVIDIA NVENC.

The issue:

Games usually run smoothly with stable FPS, but the recorded videos randomly suffer from severe stuttering, jittering and uneven frame pacing. It almost looks like V-Sync suddenly stops working.

Sometimes the recording is smooth from beginning to end. Other times the stuttering starts immediately, after a few minutes, or comes and goes throughout the recording. It can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.

OBS statistics show almost no dropped frames. In one severely affected recording, I had only 5 missed frames due to rendering lag and 0 skipped frames due to encoding lag.

What I've tried:

  • Multiple NVIDIA drivers, including hotfix 621.12 and clean installations using DDU
  • Different OBS versions, including 33.0.1
  • NVENC AV1, H.264 and HEVC
  • Game Capture and Display Capture
  • CBR and CQP
  • Internal NVMe SSD and external storage
  • HAGS enabled and disabled
  • Different FPS limits and V-Sync settings
  • Windows Clean Boot
  • Disabling MPO
  • MKV with automatic MP4 remuxing
Unfortunately, nothing has provided a reliable solution.

For example, I recently recorded 20 minutes of The Last of Us Part II almost perfectly. Shortly afterwards, Call of Duty and Battlefield recordings suffered from severe stuttering again, without changing any settings.

The problem is completely unpredictable, even after restarting Windows.

Has anyone found a reliable solution, or could an OBS developer help investigate this issue? I'm also interested in whether RTSS frame limiting has helped.

Thanks!
