Hi, dev! I am absolutely in love with your plugin! Sadly I'm kinda lost (and stumped lol) on how to make it run on Linux flatpak OBS (31.0.1). What is the correct path for dropping the plugin folder provided?

Hi Edwin-

Apologies for the delayed response. Currently Retro Effects does not have flatpak support. The good news is, over the next couple of weeks, I'll be adding it to all of my plugins, since I've finally figure out the process to make it happen.

Hey Finite,

I only recently started having an issue with Retro FX. Not sure if it's because I updated my nvidia driver, or a windows update, but without changing anything else (to the best of my knowledge) on first OBS launch after a full PC reset, when I have retro fx as a filter on a video file (like my cam border mp4 for example) it won't show in the preview window or stream. When I open the settings for that file, I can see the media file in question. If I turn the filter off, the media becomes visible. If I copy and paste the exact same instance of the plugin and delete the one it loaded with, all is well. If I close OBS and reopen, it also works.

Win 11

If there's any additional info I can go hunt down that would help, or if you already happen to know if it's something I messed up (completely possible haha) then I'd be happy to get that for you!

Thanks for all the hard work man!
Shred

P.S. As I wrote this up, there was another GPU driver update. Can't say if that will fix the problem, but if it does, I'll chime in again and let you know!

@FiniteSingularity I'm actually having this same issue. Windows 10, OBS 30.2.2, though I'm new to using this plugin. No NVIDIA driver update though there was a new Windows update I might rollback to double check. But essentially, if I change scenes, a source with the filter will show as black. If I Hide/Show the source, it will display the picture correctly; however all of this behavior is very random and inconsistent.

Looks like it might be an issue with having a Referenced Source used in multiple Scenes that has the Retro Filter enabled for it. Still working through and testing but that seems to be the common factor.

Just to confirm that does appear to be the issue. @Shredcase Make sure you aren't using any "Referenced" copies of the source in different scenes that is using the filter. Thats what will cause the issue.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try to replicate the issue. If one of you could please open an issue over on the project github page, it would be greatly appreciated.

i really enjoy this plugin and am wanting to use the cathode boot effect for when i enable/disable a source but have not been able to figure out a way to do this. is this possible? i have the move plugin installed aswell

Definitive installation instructions would be appreciated.

I'm an experienced Ubuntu / KDE / OBS configurator. I tried .config/plugins/obs-retro-effects/... but it didn't work.

Any suggestions?

Hi @DeaVain -

Unfortunately, I'm not a linux user myself. The linux build files come along for free with the OBS plugin template, so I make them available to folks. I've been (slowly) working on getting all of my plugins up on FlatPak as apparently that is the new way that OBS/plugins are being distributed for linux. If you are a discord user, there are several Linux users of my plugins on my discord that have been helpful with getting other linux users up and running. If you're intrested in that, please feel free to DM me, and I can send you an invite link (or go to my webiste, https://f15y.com and there is a discord link there).

FiniteSingularity updated Retro Effects with a new update entry:

The background cathode boot!!! I'm stoked! I use this effect on a TV PNG and that was the only thing that was missing. I remember asking about this in your stream, thanks for all the hard work Finite!

I had fun making an effect that looks like one of the very earliest home VTRs, notably AVCO's Cartrivision from the early 1970s, integrated into many large console TVs, mainly from Sears, among others. Until the advent of azimuth recording used on Beta and VHS, to reduce tape consumption, it used a "skip-field" system which records one out of every three fields (scanner disc has three heads, head #1 records or plays, while the other two only play), which the machine then plays three times on playback. The motion effect is... shall we say... strange. In any event, it allowed about 112 minutes' worth of recording on about 2000' of 1/2" video tape running at about 3 3/4 IPS (9.5cm/s).

To do this, I have to use two instances of the filter:

  • First for the "Skip frame" effect - For it to mimic the effect properly, you need either 59.94 or 60 FPS. Set it to skip two frames.
  • Second for the "Interlace" effect - So it actually emulates NTSC scanning properly.
  • BONUS ROUND: Add any number of any other effects, such as VHS, CRT, Analog Glitch, NTSC, etc.
Also, I'd like to nitpick a little about the "tape wrinkle" part of the VHS effect. VHS, Beta, U-Matic and many other video scanners rotate in the same direction as tape travel, so the the wrinkle artifacts should travel downward. Other VTRs, such as Cartrivision, EIAJ, Sony CV-series and 1" Type A and C VTRs' video scanners rotate in the opposite direction of tape travel, so the the artifacts should travel upward.

Anyway, thanks for putting this plugin out!

LOL. I lived in san jose and the cartrvision factory was near by. When they went under, you could buy their record/playback machine for $100 . Which was a lot back then, but it had pre-recorded movies and you could record your own on blanks. Those were the days.

Does anyone imagine adding audio effects to audio Because that would be cool and I like the effects so much because I like vhs

Hi @olda9991

OBS already has a ton of retro audio effects available, in VST 2.x plugins. I'd recommend looking into plugins like the izotope Vinyl VST plugin which can get sound similar to everything from an old scratched up record, to noisy broadcast signals, etc.. Some VST plugins are paid, though there are many out there that are high quality and free.
