Subject: OBS Studio – Black screen capture on macOS Tahoe with external Philips display

Hello OBS Support Team,

I'm experiencing a persistent screen capture issue with OBS Studio on my MacBook running macOS Tahoe.

My external Philips monitor works perfectly and displays my Mac desktop normally. However, OBS consistently shows a black preview.

Here is what I have already tried:

  • Enabled OBS permissions in macOS Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
  • Restarted OBS completely after changing permissions.
  • Used the macOS Screen Capture source and selected my Philips external display.
  • Deleted and recreated the capture sources several times.
  • Tested Window Capture with Safari and other available windows.
  • Checked OBS's application permissions through the OBS Studio menu.

Despite all these attempts, the preview remains black. At certain points, the display selection list was also completely empty.

Could you please help me identify the cause and find a solution?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards

Had this exact thing happen after a recent macOS update. The permission toggle in System Settings shows it's granted, but the underlying ScreenCaptureKit permissions database gets desynced, which is why your display list is coming up blank.

Toggling the switch won't fix it. You need to wipe the entry:
  1. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
  2. Highlight OBS and hit the minus (–) button to delete it completely.
  3. Restart your Mac.
  4. Relaunch OBS, click the plus sign on Sources, add macOS Screen Capture, and let macOS prompt you with the permission popup again.
If it still acts up, make sure your Philips monitor isn't running through a DisplayLink hub that requires its own separate screen recording privileges.
