I've used it in the past and worked well. I'm thinking about using it again, even though I have an i7. I get only minor lag in-game, and was thinking maybe QuickSync would help.

I forget, but how much of a quality difference will there be?
 
It depends on which generation i7 you have. You'll also just have to try and see, and decide if the quality difference is acceptable to you or not.
 
Ivy is slightly better than Sandy for QSV quality, but Haswell is really the only one that has comparable quality to veryfast x264.
