Question / Help Questions about using Canon XA20 Camcorder with OBS Studio

Hello, I'm going to be responsible for live-streaming an event this weekend and we'll be using a Canon XA20 Camcorder as the video recording device. I assumed that connecting the camcorder to my Dell Precision M6500 laptop would be no different than using a simple usb webcam in OBS, but I've heard that a capture card is needed for HD camcorders. I have a Displayport connection on my Laptop and a Displayport-to-HDMI converter, would I still need to use a capture card? If so, would the Live-Gamer Portable work? I already have that capture card. Thank you for your time, my laptop runs on 64-bit Windows 10, 4GB of Ram, with a Core i7 CPU Q720 @ 1.60GHz.
