Question / Help Question regarding recording with Dxtory and OBS overlays

Hey guys,

I use Dxtory in conjunction with OBS to stream. I also do the recording with OBS, so that I can edit it afterwards. However, H.264 is not great for editing purposes, so I've been looking into alternatives. The best solution would be to record with Dxtory (using the Lagarith codec) while streaming with OBS. However, this doesn't record the dynamic overlays that are created with OBS, such as the chat and the current music that is playing. I like to respond to the chatroom, and as such a visible context would be nice. Also, I use music from OCRemix, so I have to display that as well to adhere to their license.

What can I do to overcome this issue?

When you say that h264 isn't great for editing purposes, what do you mean? The "best" answer would be to fix whatever problem you're having with editing h264 video, or wait for the rewrite when you can use other some other codecs to record (though if you want to stream, you're pretty much stuck with h264 for now).

Re: Question regarding recording with Dxtory and OBS overlay

This is a general issue with H.264. While it is a great codec for delivering content, it is not great for editing because it is relatively CPU intensive. The longer the video is, the bigger an issue it becomes. How much of an issue it is also depends on the video editor, of course. This is why lots of people who do a lot more video work than I do transcode to other formats. However, the problem here is that you then essentially have to encode the video twice. It's like transcoding an MP3 file to a WAV file, and then encoding it back to MP3. You will then always lose quality.

So that's why I was thinking about using Dxtory for recording the video with the lossless Lagarith codec, while using OBS to stream to Twitch. The issue then is that with Dxtory I cannot capture the overlays that I created with OBS (which is logical, of course).

I'm thinking that one way to do it would be to record both with OBS and with Dxtory, and to then use an alpha mask to overlay only the parts I need of the OBS video onto the Dxtory video. I don't know if my computer can take it, but it would be a way to go about it, I suppose.

It's not a big issue, and I'll just continue recording with OBS if there is no solution. However, I'm just curious to see if there's some way to work around this.

Yeah, the rewrite will feature the ability to stream with one encoder and record locally with a different one, so that will be your best bet. Just hang tight.
