Question / Help Question regarding HW/OBS Settings for streaming.

Hello,

I've been playing League of Legends for the past few years and been thinking of streaming my sessions. I have been looking around for a good streaming software and since this is open source and free, OBS it's an obvious choice.

However, I am no computer genius and my computer specs are rather low, so in order to figure out if I even will be able to stream or not with my current specs I was hoping you guys could help me out.

My specs;

Intel Core i5-650 3.2 Ghz 4MB Catch
4GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB

My bandwidth is an optic connection with 25mb up/down speed.

I would guess my hardware is quite outdated as I bought the computer back in late 2010, but is it possible to tweak the settings in OBS to match these specs and still have a decent output in regards of quality of the stream?

Yesterday I tried OBS with my Twitch account and used the recommended settings posted on Twitch;
- 3000 Bitrate
- 1920x1080 Resolution
- 30 Fps
- Keyframe Interval set to "2"
- Scene Buffering Time 400ms
The rest of the settings where default from installation.

The results where horrific, my fps ingame dropped from stable 60 to around 15-20 with a lot of spikes and bigger lags, my taskmanager showed me that OBS was using between 70-85% of my CPU capacity. I lowered the Bitrate down to 1000, but I only gained about 10 fps, CPU usage still remained high and the general flow of the computer felt clunky and laggy.

As you might have understood so far, I've got no clue regarding these things, I usually just follow in others footsteps, but if anyone got some tips to how I could improve performance without tearing down the quality too barbarically I would be very happy.

well those are for a 100% not the recommended settings for you.

since you found this forum you probably could have found the help button to try the estimator

to make everything easy downscale to 720p and you'll be fine also a bitrate of 2000 is enough for 720p

and the bitrate has nothing to do with your performance

with an old, first gen i5 like yours. You are way way out of your league trying to stream at 1080p. I will actually be surprised if you can stream at 720p smoothly while playing LoL. I don't think your bitrate will have much impact of the performance of your game, but in your situation, if you want to stream a PC game, you will most likely need to upgrade your CPU. The best option is to get a sandybridge, or ivybridge i5, and use quick sync to stream. This will yield next to no impact on your game.
