Obs has always been my favorite program for streaming, but lately I've done more recording and uploading to youtube than I do streaming......I like to edit my videos first, but windows movie maker nor sony vegas supports flv file type, and when i try to convert the file type after its been recorded, it really kills the quality....is there any way to record in a format that is compatible with sony vegas/wmm? like avi or wmv?

go to broadcast settings. Hit "browse" on "file path" for your recording, and choose from the dropdown arrow "save as type" and choose .mp4

When i tried doing that way nothing happened when i clicked save.....i just changed the flv in the text field to mp4 and it works that way.....1 more question though if you don't mind....do you know of any guide for maximizing quality in recording?

basically un-check CBR and CBR padding, set bitrate to 1000 and buffer to 0, and it'll use as much bitrate as it needs to. Quality balance can be 7 for lots of high motion or 10 for more still things
