Question / Help PC upgrade for streaming, worth ?

Hello guys,

My current machine is quite weak for gaming&streaming;
- i3 2100 @ 3.1ghz
- HD Radeon 6870
- 8gb of ram
- 2.5 mbps upload

I'm looking at upgrade options now, buying some second hand parts. now.. I can upgrade the following;

- i3 2100 cpu --> i7 2600 (not -K)
- HD Radeon 6870 --> Gigabyte GTX 770 2gb

both second hand. the cpu is for like 130$ and gpu for 160$ (new cost 2x this price in Israel)

I got another offer from the guy who's selling the CPU;
i7 2600 + asus strics gtx 970 for approx 400$ - Do I need the gtx970 for my goals ?

* I'm a bit afraid to buy a very expensive (for me) second hand GPU like gtx970.

For what Purpose ?

I intend to stream mainly Dota2 and World Of Tanks.
I can play both games fine today, WoT with low settings to get okay fps. But if I stream, everything lags, fps drops immensely. my bet is that the CPU can't handle WoT and OBS obviously.

Anyways, I want to stream WoT with high/max settings, and WoT is single-core CPU dependent, I wonder if this CPU is good enough to run this CPU dependent game and stream.

What do you think guys ?
Do I really need the GTX 970 ? or save this money for future upgrade or get SSD....

Your current machine is not quite up to par to game and stream at all. The i3 is a dual core, and while yes they are identical cores to an i7 and w/ hyperthreading, it's still not all that fast. I wouldn't pay $130 for an i7 2600 at this time, I'd give em $80 at best. I'd pay the $130 for a 3770 still not being a K model alone is just unfortunate. 770 on the other hand will be fine for your game requirements, and streaming.

You don't need a 970, YET it would be ideal but for your uses a 770 has another year or 2 before it will be visibly too slow, unless you upgrade to 4k soon.

So, for now upgrading the GPU to the 770 is sufficient to stream and play games like WorldOfTanks.

But CPU wise - I should try and get i7-3770 at least OR upgrade the motherboard to support 4th gen and get an overclockable CPU ? but then I'll probably have to upgrade the PSU as well right ?

I think I'm "sealed' about the GPU thing, only the CPU is now in question.

** I got another offer from PC components trader; i5-4690K, Asus b85m plus, and Scythe Kabuto cooler.

All that for 290$ . Only the CPU costs 300$ new in the store.

I think that mobo isn't suitable for overclocking so there is no point in the mobo except for fitting the CPU.. ;\

what do u think ?

The price on a 2700 is too high period, its used. CPU's basically lose 50% of their value the moment you open them, and when considering the $ to performance gain per generation you'd be wildly overpaying even in countries w/ high VAT. PSU would depend on what you have already, but in reality the i7 4790k is less wattage than the 2700

You'd want the motherboard to allow overclocking, I mean buying an aftermarket cooler and an overclockable CPU w/ a locked board seems silly.

An i7 would be preferable; that i7-2600 plus GTX 970 deal would be excellent. The i7-2600 plus GTX 770 would also be good if you wanted to save some money and don't see yourself playing anything but Dota2 and WoT, but surely you'll want to play something else in the future...

I just got a i7-2600K (not overclocked according to seller's claims) in 35$ cheaper than the previous.

Plus he says if I buy his GPU as well. He'll sell R9 280X VAPOR-X 3GB + i7-2600K in 265$

The gpu is only 1 month in use with like 2 years warranty I suppose.

However, this gpu requires 2x6+2 pins I think which is not suitable with my PSU and I will have to replace it as well :( which I'm not happy about.

The super-low power consumption of the 9xx series is so tempting me...

Personally I would not go for an AMD card; I much prefer NVIDIA's consistency with driver releases, their control panel, and the third-party tools like NVIDIA Inspector for tweaking. If you still have the option of getting a 770 or 970, and doing so would also mean not having to replace your PSU, then it seems like a win-win.
