Question / Help Pause Recording?

I run into two issues:

1. I need to pause recording.

or:

2. I want to record chunks at different times and merge them into one MP4 file.

I'm on Windows.

I tried using Movie Maker (Window) today to merge three MP4 files (total size 70 MB), and the result was a 500 MB file. #fail

So questions:

1. Is there a way to pause recording? (not stop)

2. Is there a recommended way to join/merge videos on Windows that doesn't explode file size? (I'm using CBR (constant bit rate) because I'm recording my screen, which means that from frame to frame there is very little change)

Someone on CrackBerry assisted me with this. If others are wanting to know how to do this, try "ffmpeg". Search for how to concatenate MP4s.
