Bug Report Overall quality/Lagged frames

Hello,

I did a test stream of Saints Row The Third today, and I noticed in the log that there are a LOT of lagged frames. Here's the video in question: http://www.twitch.tv/thedigitalbench/b/349975179

As you can see, it looks a bit muddy and does not reliably run at a measly 40fps. It will look smooth sometimes, but during high motion (driving, running) you can see that it dips. My system is powerful enough to capture at 60, and as shown below, I have plenty of bandwidth.

So what gives? Do I have a setting off or something? I'm doing Windowed capture as Saints Row 3 does not support Gamesource capture. I've read that Twitch is having some issues this week due to hardware upgrades. Could this be the cause or did I mess something up?

I had no problem with Game Capture and SR3 and if you want to use Software Capture it's recommended to let aero on.

Nope, does not work with Game Capture. All it does is sit on the main menu while you can hear game sounds in the background. Here is the video: http://www.twitch.tv/thedigitalbench/b/349989044

All settings produced the same result. This time it just captured a black screen while I heard game audio in the background.

I'm not really concerned with game capture right now anyway. SR3 is known for being shitty with that. I'm more worried about 80% lagged frames today when 2 days ago it was not doing that.

I think this is a Twitch issue, or maybe I'm using too high of a bitrate? I simply want to increase the clarity of the stream and make it look a little less choppy.

Krazy

Anything over 3500 bitrate is really hit or miss as to whether Twitch will handle it fine or not. I don't really recommend going much over 3000, really. Especially with your chosen resolution/framerate.

Hmmm, I hadn't thought about that. Thank you for the suggestion.

If I stick with a 3k bitrate, how could I make the image clearer, especially during motion?

Krazy

Town drunk
By lowering the Quality Balance setting. Lower settings are better for games where the entire screen is moving around a lot, it preserves bitrate for motion.

Here's a quick example of Borderlands 2 at 720p60fps, Quality Balance 7, and 2900 bitrate:

http://www.twitch.tv/krazytrumpeter05/b/350141651

edit: Whoops, I forgot to tone down some settings so it isn't quite maintaining 60fps, but you should get the idea.

Wow, that looks incredible! I'm definitely going to try those settings later tonight. Any other things I should set to maintain quality like that?

Krazy

No, leave everything in Advanced alone, maybe try lowering Quality Balance to 6 or even 5. I haven't done a lot of extensive testing for FPS games, yet.

I just tried your settings in SR3 using Windowed Capture (Gamesource doesn't work for this game reliably) and got all of these error messages. Also, it kept on disconnecting and broke up my video in several parts as it reconnected (like the last version of OBS did before the Disconnect bug fix). Also, the program is now crashing out when I try to preview and even record. I don't know what I did. I changed a few settings.

I don't understand it. Is this a Twitch issue or an OBS issue? I just checked my network settings and speed and everything is 100% fine on my end.

O_O that should definitely not have happened, they are all pretty standard settings.

Are you streaming to the best Twitch server? Global Load Balancing is generally poor as it doesn't always pick the best one. Check with this tool: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmes ... _id=326034

edit: nm, I see you have one of the Ashburn servers selected. I'm not really sure wtf happened there, maybe try restarting everything?

Krazy

Town drunk
I'm just kind of baffled why you would get all those error messages and connection problems since all you did was...lower the bitrate and Quality Balance o_O

Ok, something went seriously wrong with your capture source. Your preprocess times are orders of magnitude too high. Try resetting the scene.

Yeah, it definitely looks like something bugged out. I'll re-do everything later tonight and try again. Thanks a bunch for the advice. I thought that the bitrate was the determining factor in how things look, but obviously I was wrong. :D

Krazy

Town drunk
Well, it's definitely the biggest factor, but the Quality balance can help a lot with high motion stuff.

I tried Quality 8/3k bitrate/720p @ 40fps.

How do you think it looks? I still feel like I can make it look much better.
