OBS Studio Crashed with Encoding Error while Streaming

Hi everyone,

I was streaming today, and OBS Studio crashed giving an encoding error. This is not the first time it has happened. I have attached the OBS log file in case it helps diagnose the issue.

Any help would be much appreciated!

this log indicates your GPU driver is crashing
14:23:47.634: [obs-nvenc] nvenc_encode_shared: nvEncEncodePicture failed: 4 (NV_ENC_ERR_INVALID_DEVICE): Device passed to the API is invalid.

I'd recommend running DDU and reinstalling your GPU driver https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/performing-a-clean-gpu-driver-installation.65/
Thank you so so much for your reply, I really appreciate it. I will reinstall the drivers right away.

If this doesn't solve it, could it possibly be a hardware issue?

maybe because the error would look the same if the GPU wasn't seated properly and disconnected momentarily but this is almost always a driver issue.

Okay noted thank you so much! I've just ran DDU and reinstalled the driver's for my GPU. Hopefully the problem has gone away. Thank you once again for helping me out with this.

Hi again, prgmitchell. Unfortunately, reinstalling my GPU did not solve the issue . OBS has crashed twice since then, and I have also noticed that the graphics on some of my other windows stop responding for a period of time whenever OBS crashes. Please find the attached log. Thank you in advance for your help!

Yes this is nothing that you'd be able to solve with OBS as it is still an issue with your GPU

Thank you for your reply!

Just to clarify - since we have ruled out any GPU driver issues given that I have already ran DDU and reinstalled my GPU driver, would you say this is likely a hardware issue?

Hey guys. I have the same issues. Do you think we should revert to an older version of our driver ? I would like to clarify that my PC only crashes when I am streaming. Thanks for help :)

Hi prgmitchell, upon receiving your advice, I decided to investigate whether the issue was related to my GPU by swapping it with a spare RTX 3070 graphics card I had. Unfortunately, after using the spare card for a few hours, OBS Studio crashed again, along with the computer. Surely this suggets that the issue is with OBS?

I've attached today's log for your review.

Hi, I'd like to clarify that I am not taking my best guess here but instead am telling you with 100% certainty that this is external to OBS and that your GPU driver is crashing. The logs you just sent are the same.
