Question / Help OBS only sees webcam as global source

I just picked up a Hauppauge HD PVR 2, and direct capture issues aside, I'm having problems utilizing a work around.

I'm on a Sony Vaio laptop with a built in webcam, and when trying to add a global source to my scene, OBS only sees the webcam and not the capture device.

I've tried running (what I'm pretty sure is) the 32-bit version of OBS to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm aware my capture device doesn't play well with OBS, however I'm not trying to get a direct capture from it. The videos I've found add the Hauppauge as a global source, then monitor capture the window showing the game video. This solution works successfully for all of the demonstrators, however I can't get OBS to see my capture device as a global source. That's the problem.

A global source is a source that is shared between scenes, you still have to add an actual source like a capture device, monitor capture, etc. The HD PVR2 doesn't work as a capture device, so you can't add it as a capture device to your global sources.

He added a global source that he named "HD PVR" which is probably just a monitor capture source. It's not a very clear guide. Just add monitor capture and you should be fine.

That was where I got confused. When I add a monitor capture by itself, all I get is a blank box. I'll keep messing around with it and hopefully I can get something going. Thanks for your help.

Aero disabled, monitor capture, and still get a black box when trying to capture the window? That doesn't sound right, usually that works. I wonder what on earth is going on. I admittedly don't always have an answer to these sort of situations, I don't think I've heard of that happening before. Could you also try "compatibility mode" in the monitor capture settings?
