Question / Help OBS + Hauppauge = Nightmare

Hey hey,

OBS is wonderful but I believe my "Hauppauge HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition" is pretty crappy for the $100~ I paid for it. For one, it was extremely sensitive when I first set it up, crashing a few times before it remained stable enough for me to realize how to set it up properly with an image in the program.

Anyways... my current dilemma.. I have the HDMI cable from my WII U going into the back of the Hauppauge and then the USB cable is plugged into my laptop. The cable goes from the back of the Hauppauge into the Samsung SmartTV. Yet it remains black.

OBS seems to recognize the Hauppauge but when I choose to highlight it and Window Capture (I believe that was my setup) it doesn't output it to the OBS screen. So the way I managed to get it working is by highlighting the video in the Hauppauge software but that doesn't give me 720p / 1080p.. it gives a low-res crappy output to a stream.

Any ideas?? Currently stuck on how to continue. Thanks in advance! :)

Hauppauge cards are not supported in OBS, unfortunately. The only way to get it to work is to use Window capture or Monitor capture on the Hauppauge program.

Is there a cheaper alternative than using a Hauppauge that's less than $100? Someone mentioned a few in a different thread.

I tried the Windows Capture but it grabs the WHOLE window and not just the small amount of video footage that is being detected (in my case, Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U).

I would use a monitor capture but my system is across the room sadly..not so feasible.

You can add a subregion to the window so it doesn't capture the whole window. Look at the Sub-Region section of the Window capture properties.

As for sub-$100 1080p capture, I don't know of one. You can try the AverMedia C127 (Game Broadcaster HD) which is $120 and is PCI-e, so you won't have to worry about silly delay issues due to USB 2.0, and works in OBS directly.

What if when I use the sub-region, it shows a black screen rather than the gameplay? (Also is there a way to talk to the developers to try and get Hauppauge compatible to OBS)(
