OBS Game Capture / Java (Minecraft) / stopped working

Hi,

Could somebody give me a hint as to why this stopped working?

the game capture worked last week, but now it is a black screen. The source is from Minecraft javaw.exe.

It broke after I created Scenes. When I change to screen ( e.g full screen camera), and the back to the Gaming screen ( javaw.exe) it goes black, and take 5 mins to show Minecraft.

It is set to Capture Specific window -> [javaw.exe]: Minecraft* 1.21.8

I tried removing the GameCapture and creating it again, but the source remains black.

(Javaw.exe is set to high performance mode. )

I tried to capture other screens, ( e.g the browser, Explorer, etc.,) but it is a black screen for everything. Not just javew.exe

Update: I tried "Transform > Reset Transform", and then "Transform -> Center to screen"., but it still does not work. :(

Update: I logged in and logged out, and the game was displayed again _until_ I changed the Scene! Then it went to a black screen for the Game Capture and would not change back

Steps to reproduce:

1. Login.
2. Start OBS:
3. Default Scene is with Game Capture = Game displayed.
4. Change to different Scene ( e.g Full Screen Camera )
5. Change to Default Scene with Game Capture = Game Not Displayed

To get it back I have to log out and in again. Restarting Minecraft or OBS won't clear it.

I gave up. I have spent days trying to get this to work. Fans going nuts. Sources disappearing and re-appearing for no reason.

My son's OBS works perfectly well with OBS, he streams without a hitch, and on the same computer that I tried to get it working on. Just a different account. I even tried exporting and importing his scenes/profile/sources into my OBS set-up. Same problem.

Clearly, I am too old for using software and computers. Tis a pity, because I had a lot to say!

And nobody replied to this post, and they did not reply to my cry for help on the OBS Discord. I am too old to be supported!

Bye.

You're running an old OBS version.
You need to disable HAGS
Make sure all the plugins you have installed are updated and compatible with the OBS version you're using. Contact the dev of each plugin in case of issues with them. Normally you use the Discussion section of the particular plugins page.

Try using a portable version of OBS to test it without plugins. https://obsproject.com/kb/portable-mode
If this works, then one or more of the plugins you're using are causing the issue.

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

This does not seem to make any sense. My PC has got two accounts:
My son's login -> OBS streams perfectly well, with low CPU, with Minecraft at 1920p to YouTube. The fan never comes on.
My login-> OBS stream runs at 25-35% CPU at 720p even when _not_ steaming or recording. The fan runs at full blast.

Is a change in HAGS enable or disable a per user setting, or a computer wide settings? Because I do not want to Ef up my son's OBS streaming because he will go nuts.

The OBS guides to disable HAGS refer to either Windows 10, or an older release of Windows 11. I cannot see where in Graphics Settings I can disable this in Windows 11 Pro 24H2.

Also, I copied his OBC Scenes and Profile from his account onto my account, but it has a completely different effect - His works, and my one does not. Although I am not very worried that I have broken his streaming by changing system wide settings. I have got until tonight to fix it because all hell breaks lose.

It is unclear in Windows which Settings are system wide, or are per user account. e.g HAGS.

Rule #1 I must repeat to myself: Do not touch system wide settings on the PC.

Mentally, I am not in a good place right now.

Update:

1) I was wrong about my son's set-up. His Video output is 2560x1440 base canvas and 2560x1440 Output scaled at 60 fps I have changed my OBS settings to the same 2560x1440 but at 30 fps, and the CPU load has improved a little.

2) Changing Scenes in my OBS set-up still loses the Game Capture source : turns to a black screen, and cannot come back until I restart OBS.

I have found the difference, and the problem between my set-up and my son's: WebCam.

Deactivating the WebCam reduced the CPU load from 25% down to 0.6%.

Camera is an EMEET S600. This is with the "Default Driver" set in the Source. OBS hangs and crashes when I set it to Custom!

I will start a new thread :)

Perhaps my Sources get hidden underneath another source when I change scenes. What do you think? How can I get the source to stay on top of the other sources?

Move the source you want on top to the top. you can drag it with the mouse or selecting it and then using the buttons on the bottom of source (or scenes) panel.

You only need one game source, not multiple.

You may also want to start here https://obsproject.com/kb/quick-start-guide and learn more about how OBS works.

Hi,

I have got a much better understanding of sources now, but the sources are not the problem.

Sometimes the Scene works, and sometimes it does not, and t is always the game capture that shows a black screen when it is the _only_ source. Do many people use Scenes?

I read here about using Global Sources.
" Use global sources:
For scene switching delays, you can use "Global Sources" for devices that are used in multiple scenes"

Is the Game Capture a global source? Have it got to be kept alive/not shutdown when I click and change to a different Scene? I try to change scenes so many times.

Also found this post from 2024, but I think I use one game capture source, not two
