Can OBS respond to commands, say from the Linux command line interface in some way? For example, can I trigger OBS to display a defined lower third from Linux command line?

Not directly, but you can send WebSocket messages to it.

I found obs-cmd. That works for my needs. At some point I will look for more direct integration with python. I plan, ultimately, to have OBS directives come via MQTT messaging.
