Question / Help OBS and Windows 8

As far as I know there is a problem with compiling the shaders on Windows 8. Until that is resolved, OBS won't work on Windows 8.

some people have it working fine on windows 8, I don't know what's really up with the shader thing still, some cards just fail to compile the shaders properly, but that may not be a windows 8 issue.

It's working for me but ingame FPS drops down to 30fps. All the way from 80+...
Does windows 8 new UI have some kind of Aero? I tried looking for it and disabling it, but I couldn't find it.
Anyways, I'm streaming the game windows only. As far as I know, Aero shouldn't affect OBS when streaming a window.

hm, weird. it's possible it does -- aero should be disablable in the app settings. nngh, I may actually have to get windows 8 just for testing purposes.

Yeah I tried the app settings. Aero is not there. So I guess Windows 8 doesn't have Aero. I haven't tried XSplit on Windows 8 since I forgot about it a long time ago ^_^ Maybe I'll give it a try just to compare performance and I'll post if it's something app specific or maybe just windows 8.

Mmmm... I tried a few things. It seems that you need to disable Vertical Sync on Windows 8. FPS went back to normal after that.

I also read a little bit, Windows 8 doesn't have Aero. Transparency is only visible on the taskbar and the window borders doesn't have transparency.
I also left "Disable Aero at startup" unchecked. It actually didn't do anything on Windows 8.

If you need me to test something, I'd be happy to.

It's actually the exact opposite. In Windows 8, Aero is always on. It just doesn't use "glass" transparency effects.

Oh well... there you go xD It's not exactly Aero but DWM which is the service that handles desktop composition.
Maybe the problems with Aero and streaming is the glass transparency effect? I kinda liked the basic theme on Windows 7, but Windows 8 feels a bit smoother and better built, even with all effects ON.

window capture works fine with aero -- it's monitor capture that has the issue with aero

Hi All,

Just thought id enter into OBS forums for some feedback. Have OBS installed but on running it I get the direct X error. Running the included DirectX package throws up an unhandled exception error.

Any suggestions, does windows 8 need to have a newer version of directX installed?

Hi Jim

Sorry should of put that down. Its the standard one you cover in the FAQ

OBS.exe - System Error
The program can't start because d3dx10_43.dll is missing from your computers. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Thanks for the reply :D

Thats just plain daft if windows 8 didn't come with the latest directs

So this is the error when i try to run the DXsetup redistributable in the OBS program files directory

DirectX Setup
An internal error occurred.
Please refer to DirectXLog in your windows folder to determine problem.

Looking at the log file it's saying that a newer version has already been installed (it looksl ike the same release numbers tho)

hope this helps.

Personally for me, OBS + Windows 8 works fine. It's just when OBS(or any streaming alternatives) starts to affect gameplay. FPS is high and all that, stream looks completely fine but there is an significant performance hit which makes the game unplayable even though FPS is high. Which is awkward, once the stream is off, then the lag goes away. Start it up and same.

For the time being, I degraded back over to Windows 7 and the problem is now gone.
So the answer (in my opinion) is that it does work, but I personally experience those problems and will be sticking to W7 for now until this is resolved. Bug is not exclusive to OBS but to it's alternatives/competitors as well.
