Question / Help noob question-should my video playback resolution match the resolution experienced while recording?

Hi all. This is my first time using OBS. I'm using it to record gaming sessions and watch them at a later date. My first observation is that the quality (specifically, resolution) during playback does not match the quality during capture (i.e. while I'm playing and OBS is recording). Should I expect these two to match or come close?

The fps between the two is acceptable. I don't notice any difference between those two. But the resolution is noticeably poorer on playback.

Possibly relevant info:
  • my base resolution in OBS is set to match my monitor (and gaming) resolution
  • my resolution downscale in OBS is set to none
  • the game is World of Warcraft--specifically player vs. player battlegrounds
  • my playback application is VLC
  • my OS is Win 7 64-bit
  • my system is a medium-high gaming PC. I can give precise specs if necessary.

Read through the 'how to create high-quality local recordings' thread in the Guides section. What you're most likely seeing is video compression. Be aware, creating HQ recordings either uses a LOT of CPU, or a LOT of HDD space.

I was under the impression that I would see a dip in gameplay fidelity while recording, but I haven't yet. Another sign I'm not recording properly. Thanks.
