Question / Help No audio and only screen cap of program I'm trying to record

Hi everyone, I apologize for the likely newbie question. I'm trying to use OBS to record my sessions in Cubase. I believe I have everything set up correctly, however I get no audio, and OBS only grabs a screencap of Cubase. OBS has no pending updates. I've tried recording videos as *.MP4 and *.MOV. I've tried playing the videos back in Windows Media Player, VLC and some Dell player. Below is my latest log file. Any help would be appreciated!

If the audio driver of Cubase is set to ASIO you won't be able to hear it in OBS. Even Windows can't hear ASIO audio technically(look at your volume meter when it is playing). There is a convoluted way you can use ASIO with Voicemeeter and the OBS ASIO Plugin but there is a simpler solution.

You can use a Dual 1/4 " TRS to 3.5mm (Stereo breakout cable) https://www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMP-159...0796795&sr=8-3&keywords=stereo+breakout+cable

Being an unbalanced connection you may need a noise isolator but you might not, they're cheap https://www.amazon.com/Mpow-Ground-...20&sr=1-3&keywords=ground+loop+noise+isolator

Connect it from the back of your Interface into the Line In of your onboard soundcard (LINE IN, it's blue, not the pink MIC in, do not connect a line device to a mic port unless you want to blow your ears out).

You then can add that Line In as an Audio Input Source in OBS. Now, the Line Out from your interface will produce an output from your DAW ASIO, but it will also send out your regular desktop audio, so you will need to mute your desktop audio source or remove it entirely.

For capturing Cubase, first trying launching OBS as administrator, or use Display capture to get the whole monitor that Cubase is on. When I capture Ableton or Reaper I always do display.

Can only capture ASIO Inputs like microphones or guitars on different channels, not Output from a program running in ASIO sadly. Unless you use Voicemeeter Virtual ASIO Output, then you can capture the audio using the ASIO Input

I think Voicemeeter can also do an ASIO to WASAPI conversion, but dicking with Voicemeeter is how a lot of people mess up their audio with pops/clicks and a host of other problems

Awesome - thanks, everyone! Got myself set up an an admin on my own machine (seriously Microsoft, W the actual F?). I can now record video. I'll check out hacks for capturing the audio - will likely go with Dedrick's suggestion and run a cable from the out of my Steinberg interface back to the line in on my computer.

Update: the OBS ASIO plugin based on Portaudio doesn't seem to work with Cubase. With this, the only option in OBS is RealTek ASIO, and unless Cubase is running it's own ASIO driver/engine, I get no audio from Cubase. I'm going to try the plugin based on Bassasio, once I've figured out how to compile it.

the asio plugin records inputs of asio devices and not the outputs of a daw.
If you need to record the outputs of a daw, you need a virtual audio driver.
For instance Reaper can route audio to Rearoute (its virtual driver); in that way, mixes can be captured in Obs with the asio plugin.
NB: I'm one of the authors of obs-asio
