Question / Help Need Help with AverMedia LGHD : Extremely High CPU usage?

I need help please - I came across this thread below and the Gentlemen " Sloth" had the exact same issue that I am currently having.

my main worry is my CPU usuage using Avermedia with OBS // along with help with my bitrate and buffer
- in a perfect world I want no lag or stuttering in my stream or local recordings

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Should this Still be happening?


Just bought an Avermedia Live Gamer HD, and I'm still seeing massive (like maxed out) CPU usage when I try to use it as a source in OBS. I'm only streaming in 720 @ 60fps and my PC could handle this without the card. In fact, the quality seems to be worse when I'm using the card versus software capture. I can locally record with REcentral, the software that it comes with, beautifully and with little to no CPU usage, but when I attempt to use it to stream, with both OBS and Xsplit, it seems to be hitting my CPU really hard. I have the latest firmware/drivers, and I've tried uninstalling those and OBS to no result. I'm incredibly frustrated. I can find little to no information about how this is supposed to be set up for OBS, and I'm at my wit's end with google. I know there's something I'm missing. Anyone?

If you bought a Live Gamer HD expecting that it would reduce CPU usage, then you are unfortunately mistaken. Capture cards themselves do not reduce CPU usage, especially in single-PC streaming setups. The main advantage of capture cards in terms of performance is that they enable you do have a dual-PC streaming setup, but in that case it's not the capture card that's doing the work to reduce load, it's the streaming PC's CPU that is taking the load in order to leave the gaming PC unaffected.

Recording in RECentral uses the LGHD's onboard hardware encoder, but that is for local recordings only, and the bit rate has to be cranked up to compensate for the encoder's low quality. OBS can't use the LGHD's encoder, and even if it could it wouldn't be worth it for the huge drop in quality.

The best thing for you to do to reduce CPU usage is to lower your encoding resolution or frame rate.

Fortunately for moi I bought this card for my rig, for the sole purpose of recording my game play locally using Recentrals program
Actually I purchased this card before I ever caught wind on Streaming ,Xsplit, Twitch and so forth
But from what I read here - this OBS program works fantastic with the Avermedia Card. ( Not sure how)

Admittedly I've never tried to stream or do any local recordings without using the Aver CArd on OBS so will give that a try


but let me ask you - how should one be streaming their game play with Obs?
Do I use Windows, Game, Monitor Capture, Etc. and where should ones CPU usgae be at using just OBS to stream?

so to recap
I shouldn't use the Aver card to do streaming or Local recording through OBS , correct?
Just want to make sure I understand all of this

one more question - where should my bitrate / buffer be set at if my upload is at 38.9mbps?

Game capture is the fastest capture method in OBS, so if you can capture a game with that, then that's the preferred option. Window capture works best with Aero enabled and is also a good choice, assuming the window you're capturing isn't in Fullscreen mode. Monitor capture should be avoided if at all possible on Windows 7.

Using the capture card is also an option (a far better replacement for Monitor capture, and works on fullscreen apps), but just understand that it won't reduce CPU usage.

What settings do you have set for your card in the Video Capture Device Source? The log doesn't include them and that might be the problem here.

Hi there - sorry about the slow reply - I took a look at the settings on the Video Capture Device Source this morning and they actually didnt match the current OBS settings I had in place or on my Avermedia card. - so as soon as I arrive home I will take a better look at it
and I also noticed on the Avermedia Recentral software ( using the pro setting to view the current settings )) that the " Video bitrate" there set at 60.00mbps , so I'm going to try to tweak that and see if it does anything

And thank you all for the help/ Advise/ Opinions - seriously much appreciated - you guys are awesome
